One of the major Linux distributions is Debian. It may not be one of the most used or heard of the most, but without it, many other distributions (such as Ubuntu or LMDE) would not exist. This system is one of the most used as a base for other distributions, and it is one of the best distros for slightly advanced users who want something simple and, at the same time, complete, over which they have control. And while the community works on the next version 11 of this Linux, its users can download, from today, the new Debian 10.9.
Just this weekend, the Debian developer community announced the release of a new update for the current “Buster ” branch: the new Debian 10.9. This is the ninth update of the stable version of this Linux, and it is a new point in terms of patches and corrections.
What’s New in Debian 10.9
Of course, we do not expect to find big revolutionary changes in this version of the system. The new Debian 10.9 is a maintenance update more focused, above all, on correcting bugs, problems and errors of all kinds.
One of the few changes that we will find in this new update is the SBAT support for FWUPD packages. From it, the rest of the news that this new distro brings us are corrections and improvements . For example, it fixes a rather serious security flaw in cloud-init that could allow others to read our generated passwords, and new microcode patches to protect Intel CPUs . Many other errors detected by the rest of the system have also been corrected, although none of them have had a special impact as those already mentioned.
As for the Kernel, the latest available patches of Linux 4.19 have been installed, the version included in this distro. New versions of LibreOffice, Python, Firefox ESR, Chromium and Tor have also been installed. And the Debian installer has also been updated to fix some minor bugs reported by various users.
Download and update
This new version of the Linux distro is now available to all users. Those who want to update their systems can do so in a number of ways. The fastest, and recommended, is to open a terminal and execute the following command:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
This command will be in charge of updating our distro and updating it. It will download all the patches, program updates and everything included in the Debian 10.9 change list so that, in a short time, we will have our computer updated and ready to continue working with it.
If we are not using Debian on our computer yet, and we want to give this distro a try, we can download the ISO of this latest version from its website . However, if we already have it installed, the Debian managers themselves recommend not downloading it, but updating as we have explained.
