How to Create a Panorama on Instagram: Step-by-step Guide and Applications

If you try to post a photo with a panoramic aspect ratio on Instagram you will see that it is too small to fit or directly cut. But wait, just as there are many creative ways to take advantage of your own feed or stories, there is also an interesting solution with which you can create panoramas with multiple images . We will explain how to do it.

Create panoramas on Instagram

Create panoramas on Instagram

Instagram is designed to use images with a certain aspect ratio in which the 1: 1 square format always prevails. This is easy to understand, it is an app to consume content preferably from the mobile phone and we use it most of the time vertically.

But, what happens if you publish a more panoramic image. Well, if you fit the image to the 1: 1 view, you can see it too small and with some white stripes that sometimes disturb. If you don’t do that, then you lose the information on the sides.

So if you want to get the best quality when it comes to displaying a photo with a panoramic aspect ratio or even new creative options, then the best option is to go for multi-image montage. As you may already know, Instagram has long been able to publish several images in the same publication (gallery). So this is what we are going to take advantage of.

However, before seeing how the process is, you have to stop and know what are the resolutions that the platform currently supports.

Resolution of photos and videos on Instagram

Instagram photos and videos have a predetermined resolution, all content that does not adapt to this aspect ratio will have to be cut. Therefore, to be clear about the whole process that we will see later, the first thing is to know what these resolutions are.

In photographs, the images you can upload will have the following maximum resolution :

  • 1080 x 1080 pixels, is the classic 1: 1 aspect ratio photo
  • 1350 x 1080 pixels, portrait photography and 5: 4 aspect
  • 1080 x 566, horizontal photography

Knowing this, you can already intuit that when creating a panorama with several images from an initial one, all these will have to have the same aspect ratio (resolution).

How to create panoramas for Instagram from PC

If you are going to use your computer to create the images that will later shape the panoramic post on Instagram, the first thing you will need is an image editor . Here you have multiple options, from paid tools such as Photoshop to other free GIMP tools, there are even online editors.

Once you have the editor, all you have to know is that to create these images you will need two documents. These are the steps to follow:

  1. Create a document with a height of 1350 or 1080 pixels as you want a 1: 1 or vertical 5: 4 aspect ratio. Then, the width will be 1080 multiplied by the number of images that will make up your panorama. For example, in our case it would be 2160 x 1080
  2. Next, take the photo you want to show and fit it inside that first document
  3. Export the image at maximum quality
  4. Create a new document with the aspect ratio of each image, as we saw before, this will be 1350 x 1080 or 1080 x 1080
  5. Paste or drag on the new canvas the image you previously exported
  6. Adjust the image so that one half is visible first, and export. Then repeat the process with the other or other parts

You could also do all this previous process by creating guides and then select and copy each area to paste it later in the new document. There are many options, but they all share the same basis.

With all these images ready, the next step is to transfer them to your smartphone or publish from your computer through any of the available means. Although for simplicity for everyone, it is best to do it from the phone.

How to create a panorama from the mobile

If you want to create several images to mount a panorama or any other composition from the mobile phone, you can also do it. Both in iOS and Android there are many applications that allow you to crop and adapt an image to different resolutions and aspect ratio.

An example of this type of free application is Adobe Photoshop Mix . With this Adobe solution you can do all this and something else, but our idea is only and exclusively to create the images and then mount our panorama.

The process is identical to the previous one, you have to fit the original image with the vertical resolution of the publication and width multiplied by the number of images you need or want to have. And then, once you’ve exported that image, create a cutout with the final size of each individual file.
