Chrome Launches an Experiment to End Phishing

One of the most important threats we see when surfing the Internet is Phishing . It is something that can come through email, messaging applications, social networks… Basically they are messages that hackers use as bait to achieve their goals. It is a widely used strategy that can put us in danger. In this article we echo the new Chrome experiment to end this problem.

Chrome will hide the full URL to fight Phishing

Google Chrome wants to do an experiment in the next version of the browser, 86, each to fight against Phishing. As we have mentioned, it is a problem that affects many users. This makes the developers themselves always look for ways to improve the tools to be less vulnerable. Of course, in the end the most important thing will always be common sense when navigating.

Chrome Launches an Experiment to End Phishing

Google’s popular browser is going to put users through a large-scale test to try to put an end to Phishing or at least lessen the problem. This time what they are going to do is hide the full URL in the address bar and only show the domain name.

In this way they try to avoid identity theft scams. They want to see if users, by seeing only the domain name and not the full URL, are more vigilant to avoid falling victim to this very afflicting problem.

As we have mentioned, this test will arrive with Chrome 86 . The stable version is scheduled to arrive at the end of August. This will be the moment when the Google browser will launch this experiment to fight against Phishing.

A selection of users for the experiment

Keep in mind that not all users will be part of this experiment. It will be a limited group, randomly assigned, who will start to see the domain name and not the full URL.

However, users will be able to see the full URL in two ways. One of them is simply by hovering over the domain name and the full address will be displayed there. Another option will be to right-click on the URL and check the option to Always show the full URL.

The idea of Chrome in short is to see how users act in the face of this change. See if showing only the domain name and not the full address can help you fall less into the Phishing trap .

We will have to wait to see if this experiment in Google’s browser really improves the defense against identity theft. It is a problem that is very present in our day to day and that puts our security and privacy on the net at risk. It is a threat that we must always bear in mind and prevent it from affecting us. We leave you an article where we explain why Phishing triumphs. There we talk about the main strategies they use.
