Canon PowerShot Zoom: a Digital Spyglass with Zoom up to 800mm

At the beginning of September Canon presented a very particular product in Japan, one that a priori you might think would only interest users from the land of the rising sun. But no, this new Canon spyglass could be what you’ve been looking for to see where your eyes can’t reach.

If you remember the movie Rear Window , the first thing that will come to mind is the image of its protagonist looking at his neighbors through binoculars. Well, that’s more or less what you can do with this new Powershot Zoom. A camera that is really like a spyglass, a device to see in detail everything that is very far from you. And not only that, you can also photograph it or even record it on video.

As we say, this is a very particular proposal, but it seems that it could have more pull than we might think at first. And it is that with the design change that Canon has implemented improvement in terms of capabilities by offering a zoom that would go up to 400 mm optical and 800 by combining a digital zoom . That is to say, an outrage when you consider that the device fits in the palm of your hand.

The key to offering this level of zoom is in its design that goes beyond the classic camera. compact to one that copies in part the shapes of a spyglass. This is what allows us to introduce a set of lenses capable of bringing what is far closer together. And without getting dizzy, because it is also possible to add an optical stabilization system that reduces the movements of said lenses.

Regarding its capture capabilities, the PowerShot Zoom integrates a 1/3 inch CMOS sensor with a resolution of 12MP with which to record video at 1080p resolution and take pictures at that resolution. All this material in turn would be stored on a microSD card and you could transfer it to your smartphone to share quickly as it happens with other cameras.

Along with all this, we only have to add improvements at the software level such as the face tracking options that could be very interesting for use in sports environments. For example, as shown in their promotional video, to watch a soccer match and not miss anything that happens in the small area.

Finally, this small and striking camera, spyglass, telescope or whatever you prefer to call it, integrates a lithium battery that is charged through a USB C connector and will have a price of around 300 euros.

The spyglass for “pirates” of the future

Canon’s new proposal breaks the schemes of many users, but shows that sometimes very interesting devices can emerge from such specific cases. On this occasion the Powershot Zoom could become the ideal product for hikers , nature lovers who like to observe in detail the animals that surround them, also for the curious or simply for those who seek to see in detail and not as a game of Sensitive Soccer to your soccer team when you go to the stadium on Sundays.
