Can Netflix delete your account for sharing it?

Streaming platforms like Netflix have gained a lot of weight in recent years, to the point of becoming one of the main forms of entertainment in almost every home. Nowadays, almost everyone has at least one of these streaming platforms, and even more taking advantage of the account sharing option that they “allow”. So far, Netflix hasn’t deleted any accounts for sharing, but can it?

Sharing an account is as easy as creating an account and passing the password to another person or persons (depending on the Netflix plan we choose, as we will see later). As we say, to date there has been no account blocking or deletion for this, but the reality is that sharing an account goes against Netflix policies.

Account sharing may not be entirely legal

The first thing to keep in mind if we are going to share an account is that we will not be able to do it with the most basic plan that Netflix offers (at least, comfortably). This only allows simultaneous playback, so if you leave your password to someone else and they are using it you will not be able to do it. For this, there are the Standard and Premium plans, which allow 2 and 4 simultaneous reproductions respectively .

As we say, to share account and expenses we will only have to leave the password to the person or persons with whom we are going to share the account. What is the problem? That this can go in most cases against Netflix policies. Point 4.2 of these indicates that the password cannot be shared outside the home, so access to the account is limited to cohabitants :

The Netflix service and all content viewed through the service is for your personal, non-commercial use and may not be shared with individuals outside of your household . During your Netflix membership, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to access the Netflix service and view Netflix content. Except as mentioned, no right, title or benefit will be transferred to you. You agree not to use the Service for public display.

The owner, the only responsible

Another thing that we must keep in mind when we share an account is that we must only do it with trusted people. If we don’t do this, nothing prevents one of the people from leaving the password to another person, to the point where your password ends up in more places than you’d like. In addition, in this way, it would be difficult to detect that a person is making fraudulent use of Netflix, which could lead to liability only for the account holder , as explained in point 5.2 of the Netflix policies:

Passwords and account access. The subscriber who created the Netflix account and whose Payment Method is charged (the “Account Holder”) has access to and control over the Netflix account and the Netflix-enabled devices used to access our service, and is responsible for the activity that occurs on such Netflix account . To maintain control over the account and prevent anyone from accessing the account (which would include information about the account’s viewing history), the Account Owner must maintain control of all Netflix-enabled devices used to access the account. service and not reveal to anyone the password or the details of the Payment Method associated with said account. You are responsible for updating and maintaining the accuracy of the information you provide us about your account. We may terminate your account or block it to protect you, Netflix, or our partners from identity theft or other fraudulent activity.

Despite all this, the truth is that Netflix has not taken action yet to share an account . Of course, the company started a pilot program to charge a supplement in some countries for sharing an account, although at the moment it seems that there are no plans to extend this measure to more countries like ours. We do not know what will happen in the future, but at least for now we can continue to share our accounts, although the company plans to restrict this possibility for the coming years.
