The cloud has been with us for a long time, and many companies offer their cloud storage services. But they are increasingly interesting, because the speed of Internet connection – and its stability – on mobile devices is greater, and because our files – photographs or videos – are becoming heavier. And obviously, Google thinks about all this and in Android 10 we have a function to free up space automatically.
What we upload to the cloud is available at any time – if we have an Internet connection – on any device, and without taking up internal storage space. So it is an ideal resource not only to improve file availability between various platforms, but also to save memory , which is undoubtedly a ‘limited asset’ on our smartphones. As we advanced, the Mountain View company takes all this into account, and for this we have Android 10 with the Smart Storage function, which is responsible for automatically freeing up space.
Smart storage on Android 10: how it works and how to use it on your mobile
To activate this function of Android 10, we simply have to open the native application of Settings on our device, and then access Storage . Once inside, we will find detailed information about the space occupied in the internal memory and the micro SD card – if applicable – , but we will also see the access to Smart Storage . By moving the slide button we will have activated it and, effectively, it will work automatically when necessary.
This system takes advantage of Google Photos. If our photos and videos – 60 days old or more – already have a backup in Google Photos, the device will automatically delete them from the internal memory to make free space. This can also be done with files that have been downloaded, as well as temporary files from different applications, and the cache. But it will, only and exclusively, when our device is very close to running out of internal storage space.
It is something that, by the way, we can do whenever we want from the Google Photos application itself, manually. And also in the Device Settings, in Storage, we can manually use the button Free up space. However, this function is automatic and will only be activated when the device detects, as we mentioned before, that we are about to run out of available memory on the device. It is one of the best ways to control storage without spending time ourselves.
