Apple Music LossLess: HomePod Compatibility

Apple Music LossLess

Last week we witnessed the announcement of Apple Music LossLess, which offers the ability to listen to music at the highest quality. While this was news that was not without controversy as there were many doubts about the devices that are compatible. In the press release itself, it was reported that the latest generation iPhone as well as AirPods with an H1 chip could support this music format. Now Apple has wanted to clarify informing that the HomePods will also have this support .

Apple to offer support for LossLess on HomePods

As we have previously commented, the HomePods were left out of LossLess support, something that created a lot of controversy within hours of the announcement. It was not logical that speakers whose main function is to reproduce music at the highest quality could not offer songs with LossLess. Now this has been fully resolved. A recently released support document reports that the HomePod will be compatible with LossLess in a future Apple speaker software update.

It will be in the month of June when Apple begins to offer music at a quality standard of up to 48 KHz, with the ‘Apple Music LossLess’ technology. Although, you can also find Hi-Res LossLess technology that has a superior quality between 48 KHz and 192 KHz. All this may end up reaching the HomePods but not simultaneously but in a future update that does not have a set date.

Bluetooth, a limitation for Hi-Res LossLess

We have commented that Hi-Res LossLess will offer much higher quality than standard with standard LossLess. Although this technology can not be implemented AirPods due to the limitations of Bluetooth technology . Although you may think that Bluetooth connectivity is perfect, the truth is that this is not the case and Apple can do absolutely nothing. To be able to send music at high quality, an intermediary will be required between the headphones and the iPhone, iPad or Mac itself.

The fact of using a cable in AirPods is something really complicated, but in AirPods Max it is easier to have the jack output. It is here where Apple has shown all the interest of this note since they affirm that when the Jack cable is used it is possible to have a higher quality but not the maximum quality due to the limitation that exists. This is because a conversion from analog to digital has to be made, which naturally has a loss in quality. Specifically, they detail it as follows:

The Lightning to 3.5mm audio cable was designed to allow ‌AirPods Max ‌ to connect to analog sources for listening to movies and music. ‌AirPods Max ‌ can be connected to devices that play Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless recordings with exceptional audio quality. However, given the analog-to-digital conversion on the cable, the playback will not be completely lossless.

For now, what should be noted is that next June Apple Music LossLess and Dolby Atmos will be available in most of the devices. In this release it is expected that there will be a complete catalog with LossLess and with the passage of time songs that have begun to be conceived with LossLess will be included.
