What do your kids watch on TV when you’re not around? The smart TV, mobile and tablets have become one of the main forms of entertainment for the little ones in the house. Almost all video streaming platforms offer child profiles so that minors can watch age-appropriate content. This week, Google goes one step further, as Google TV, its other system for televisions, launches a new function that recommends content to the little ones using artificial intelligence.
Google AI knows what your kids can and can’t see
What sets Google TV apart from any other TV operating system is its AI – based recommendation system . This week is being the most important for this system since its launch. On the one hand, Google has just launched the Chromecast with Google TV HD, a device identical to the original, but with fewer features in order to offer a cheaper price.
On the other hand, the Chromecast with Google TV (the original model with 4K resolution), has just been updated to Android 12. But the thing hasn’t stopped there, since the system now brings improvements for children’s profiles . These features are coming to these devices, as well as Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips TVs that have Google TV.
How does the new Google TV kids profile work?
Profiles for minors have followed different paths on Android TV and Google TV. The second allows to separate between users. In this way, each of our children can have their own profile with recommendations for their taste and appropriate for their age. On the other hand, Android TV has preferred to opt for the classic Parental Control, which uses a PIN system to limit access to minors. It also has the Restricted Profile, which is a mode that prevents children from accessing certain apps within the TV.
The new Google TV update adds a twist to all this. Now, instead of pre-marking what our children can and cannot watch, the system will ask us which series and movies are essential . In this way, the little ones will always have these drawings at hand, and they will not get lost in the list of recommendations.
But there is more. AI recommendations will be the key to this system. Depending on the content they are watching and the age that has been previously specified, Google TV will carry out tests showing new content to minors so that they do not get bored. The recommendation will also be based on the previous qualification that we have established . In this way, if there is a series that we are not interested in, the system will never show it to you.
Everything fits perfectly with YouTube’s systems for minors
In addition, parents and guardians can set three different levels of exploration for YouTube : content for children under 9 years of age, videos for children between 9 and 13 years of age and productions for those over 13 years of age. All this is complemented by the YouTube supervised account system that was implemented last year.
Google already took the lead with YouTube Kids. It seems that those from Mountain View continue to strive to have the most advanced and controlled system so that the best of age can consume quality content from home and in complete safety.
