The launch of AMD’s Ryzen 9000X3D processors on November 7 alone has many questioning whether to buy the current Ryzen 7 7800X3D, or wait for the new Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The upcoming processor will deliver significant gains for gaming performance, but should you wait?
Ryzen 7 9800X3D: What We Know So Far
Multiple leaked benchmarks suggest that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will be up to 35 percent faster in multi core performance than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Built using AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology, the 9800X3D clocks in at 4.7 GHz base, 5.2 GHz boost, and an overclocking potential of 5.6GHz on Precision Boost Overdrive.
The 9800X3D’s Cinebench R23 multi and single core performance was 25,258 and 2,261 respectively, compared to the 7800X3D’s 18,759 and 1,808 respectively. That’s an impressive degree of performance and huge improvement for gamers who want to take their systems to the limits.
Price and Availability
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D will sell for roughly 599 euros (around 30 euros more than the 7800X3D). It does provide a performance boost, but for what you’re paying, the price increase isn’t so bad. All of which are expected to be released in 2024, but means the processor will launch ahead of its more powerful siblings; the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and the Ryzen 9 9900X3D.
Should You Wait?
If you’re looking for the best gaming processor, it just might be worth waiting for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D’s huge performance boost. But if you’re after the best value and the best long term performance it’s best to wait just a few weeks before we upgrade when we’ll likely see performance improvements.
For gamers and performance enthusiasts wanting a strong upgrade it’s probably best to wait a little longer for the release of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
