After months of rumors and leaks, the new OnePlus 9 are official. These are the first phones that the firm launches after its association with Hasselblad, so we can expect great improvements in the cameras of both devices.
But the new range of premium devices not only feature the first Hasselblad camera seen on a smartphone, but they do not arrive boasting the best mobile processor of the moment, a state-of-the-art display technology and the fastest wireless charging.
Differences between the two phones
This year there are not so many differences between the two models. Both the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro share a battery of the same capacity and charge (by cable), as well as a processor, connectivity with 5G networks, memory and storage configurations, Hasselblad software and Android 11 ruling the device together with OxygenOS .
The differences go through, as you can see in the following table, the screen, the camera, as well as the type of wireless charging.
OnePlus 9 features
The OnePlus 9 Pro hits stores boasting a 6.55-inch Full HD + Fluid Display with a flat panel without curve, one of the main differences with the Pro model. It still maintains a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a touch sampling 240 Hz, HDR 10+ support, Display Mate A + rating, and a maximum brightness of 1,100 nits.
It works with a Snapdragon 888 processor accompanied by 8 or 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a UFS 3.1 storage of 128 or 256 GB, all governed by Android 11 with OxygenOS as a customization layer, nothing of ColorOS as it will happen in China.
Its battery is 4500 mAh and has a Warp Charge 65T wired charge that charges from 1% to 100% in just 29 minutes and a 15W wireless charge.
Camera-wise, it uses the same advanced color standards as the OnePlus 9 Pro: Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad . In addition, its triple camera system gives users the power to capture stunning images with the most natural colors on a mobile device for a professional-level photography experience.
At the hardware level we have a 50MP ultra wide angle, a Sony IMX766 sensor and a unique freeform curved lens to reduce distortion. The 48MP main camera also offers exceptional imaging capabilities, thanks to the Sony IMX689 sensor. In addition, the monochrome camera supports the main camera to obtain photos with more detail, especially in black and white images. This camera is capable of recording 8K clips.
On the front is a 16 MP Sony IMX 471 front camera featuring advanced natural skin tone algorithms and a new HDR function to enhance backlit selfies.
OnePlus 9 Pro Specifications
The Fluid Display 2.0 screen of the OnePlus 9 Pro has a size of 6.7 inches and a QHD + resolution of 3217 x 1440 px, in addition to a slight curvature. It has the latest generation of advanced mobile display technology, thanks to the integration of LTPO technology we have an automatic adjustment of the refresh rate that goes from 120 Hz to 1Hz to adapt to the activity that the user is performing at that moment. In addition, this model has Hyper Touch technology that provides a much faster response time when we play certain games, increasing the synchronization speed between the processor and the screen to 360 Hz, up to 6 times faster than before.
To offer bomb-proof performance, the mobile also houses a Snapdragon 888 and an LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. It is also sold with 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory.
Its battery is 4500 mAh and maintains a Warp Charge 65T to 65W cable charge capable of charging the phone from 0 to 100 in 29 min. The smartphone launches a 50W wireless charge that goes from 1 to 70% in 28 minutes, reaching 100% in 43 minutes. Of course, there is also reversible charging to charge other devices.
As for the camera, we have a 48 MP IMX789 main sensor designed exclusively for OnePlus that allows working with 12-bit RAW format. It is accompanied by a 50 MP Sony IMX 766 ultra wide angle with a 110º field of view, an 8 MP telephoto lens with 3.3x and 30x optical zoom in digital and a fourth monochrome sensor.
This camera debuts HDR capture in the main camera and in the ultra wide angle and Tilt-Shift mode to take “miniaturized” photographs. In addition to 8K recording, it allows you to use DOL HDR technology for videos (making it possible to always see people clearly in backlit environments) and work with an Ultra-stable 4K mode. All of these new features allow for faster focus speeds, as well as 64 times more color information for greater precision, clearer images during the day and night and less motion blur in videos.
In front, the same 16 MP sensor is kept with the same tools to improve selfies against the light. To this we add IP68 protection and dual speakers.
What’s new at Hasselblad
This time Hasselblad collaborates with OnePlus , not on the camera hardware, but on the software.
OnePlus and Hasselblad jointly calibrated the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro sensors, conducting numerous lab tests using Hasselblad’s high standards for color. In addition, they worked together to optimize hundreds of real-life scenes through computational photography to fine-tune color based on their mutual understanding of color performance, as well as the needs and habits of smartphone users.
This new OnePlus standard for color calibration makes it possible to provide more perception-accurate and natural-looking colors to photos taken with the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. To this we add that the OnePlus camera app and Oneplus 9 Pro has been renewed to resemble, aesthetically, what we can find in any of the cameras of the famous and prestigious photography firm, in charge of recording the arrival of man on the moon.
The professional mode takes advantage of the Hasselblad experience to offer the user a large number of controls so that the photography experts can control their photos such as, adjust the ISO, focus, exposure time, white balance and much more. Users can also shoot in 12-bit RAW format to collect 64 times the color information, compared to the 10-bit RAW traditionally found on other smartphones.
