All MIUI updates for Xiaomi mobiles

For those who do not know, Xiaomi was not born as a brand specialized in the manufacture and sale of mobile phones, but its first adventures in the telephone industry were in the field of software. Specifically, in the development of MIUI.

Since the first version of the brand’s operating system based on Android was launched, 12 years have passed. MIUI, in its first version, was born as a fork based on Google’s operating system in August 2010 to provide another interface, more similar to iOS than what Android offered. It was not until a year later that the first Xiaomi Mi 1 would be born, equipped with this software.

Since then, we have gone through up to 13 versions of the operating system , the first ones being very light, with hardly any changes in the interface, until reaching MIUI 6 / MIUI 7, the customization layers that brought the most novelties to the firm’s phones.

How many updates does your Xiaomi receive

Recently, Xiaomi’s update policy has undergone some changes to adjust to what the competition offers. Before 2022, the Redmi series was receiving 1 system change while the Mi series was receiving 2 Android updates. Now these figures are extended by 12 months in each case.

According to the new strategy of the brand, the Redmi series will receive 1 or 2 Android updates . But the Redmi Note series will receive 2-3 operating system updates , just the same as what happens with the flagships of the firm .

But, in addition to one, two or three operating system changes, Xiaomi will also provide security updates to its devices for 3 years . And they will receive an update every 90 days. Of course, these periods can be delayed by 1 to 2 weeks depending on the market we are in, but just know that, more or less, every 3 months, you will have a security update.

Regarding POCO mobiles, nothing is too clear, but it has been said that mobiles launched throughout 2021 will see, at least, two operating system changes and 3 years of security patches.

All versions of Xiaomi software

Although we also have to count on MIUI 12.5 as a separate update, due to the number of improvements it brought to compatible smartphones, the reality is that we have seen 13 versions of Xiaomi’s famous customization layer. It is true that the first 5 are all very similar and have no changes between them, but we must not forget that, at that time, it was a very unknown system, only present in China.

MIUI 1

Based on the phrase Me-You-I, this first version of what has now become one of the most famous forks based on Android added many exclusive features to what Google’s own operating system offered.

It worked with Android 2.1 , as a base to which it added different text fonts, greater customization of the home and lock screen and more system settings.

MIUI 2

This version of MIUI brought a slightly improved user interface and smoother animations, while also increasing the availability of devices on which you could use the ‘in-house’ software. Other than that, there weren’t too many changes from the first version.

In fact, it also works on Android 2.1, although it came to see Android 2.3.5

MIUI 3

When MIUI 3 was released, the platform was updated to 2.3.6, which brought some changes, but even less than when moving from MIUI 1 to MIUI 2. In fact, the user interface is the same (and it will be in the future). successive versions of the operating system). What is new is the arrival of the theme app to fully customize the mobile.

It would have a fairly long journey, lasting more than a year among the -few- compatible brand devices.

MIUI 4

This update highlighted MIUI in the Android-based customization layers in the ecosystem, beginning to be recognized by users based on word of mouth and, above all, the increased fame of Xiaomi smartphones, which were beginning to be known outside of China.

It is the customization layer that brought Android 4.0 to the firm’s smartphones , along with new icons and a transparent status bar. The stability and security of the system were improved, at the same time that the brand developed its own antivirus to analyze the apps and files that we downloaded to the smartphone.

MIUI 5

This update brought Android 4.1 Jellybean and a slight refresh to the look of system icons and fonts with the idea of providing a new, cleaner user interface .

This version of MIUI was kept up to date for a year, until it received Android Kitkat and became famous for being reinstalled with the Xiaomi Mi 4, one of the first mobile phones of the firm to arrive in Spanish territory before the official landing of the firm in our country.

MIUI 6

With MIUI 6 , Xiaomi revolutionized its operating system, in a way quite similar to what iOS 7 meant for the iPhone. It was then, almost 8 years ago, when the brand integrated the aspect that has lasted until today .

MIUI-6

The interface was adapted to Android 5.0 Lollipop and introduced flatter and more minimalist icons, as well as some new wallpapers. Unfortunately, there weren’t many more new features and functions for Xiaomi phones.

MIUI 7

Taking into account that the great leap occurred in the previous version, MIUI 7 , it did not contribute much to the Xiaomi ecosystem beyond integrating new security patches, some new wallpaper and some change in some system app. Here the improvements were “in the shadows”, with greater energy efficiency and better management of RAM resources.

This update also allowed us to learn about the new features of Android 6.0 in the brand’s mobile phones, the famous Marshmallow.

MIUI 8

This update brought Android 7.0 Nougat with it, and also gave MIUI users access to Dual Apps and Second Space. Something that is still used today thanks to the many possibilities it offers. There were also minor tweaks to the user interface and system apps received some improvements, just like in the previous version of the software.

miui 8 The system becomes much more colorful and contrasted, as well as more readable with the appearance of new fonts. The gallery receives new functions, it becomes more efficient and we can edit video for the first time without resorting to third-party apps.

MIUI 9

This update is the one that supposed a revolution at the level of characteristics, since they grew exponentially. Until now, almost all the news was subject to changes in the interface and operation, but after a first preview of new functions in MIUI 8, new paths would begin to be explored here.

The firm’s mobiles could now work with two apps through the split screen tool, we received the new application vault , a new silent mode, key shortcuts and gestures, improvements in the query and management of notifications and the much-demanded face unlock .

MIUI 10

The arrival of Android 9.1 to Xiaomi’s operating system made it possible to develop a series of optimizations to improve the operating system of the technology brand’s devices.

The features were less than in MIUI 9 , but we were also able to enjoy new notification tones, expanded notification query, a revamp of smartphone multitasking, and new system apps such as clock, calendar, and notes.

MIUI 11

From here, the news in the operating systems were expected like rain in May and the reality is that Xiaomi did not disappoint. Each new iteration of MIUI, in addition to slight aesthetic and operational changes, was accompanied by a dozen new configurations.

In this case we welcomed Android 10 and its new Dark Mode, in addition to:

  • Monochrome mode in ultra power saving
  • New calculator app
  • New notes app
  • new icons
  • Optional app drawer tweak for system launcher
  • smoother animations
  • Automatic management of screenshots
  • Option to remove system-wide ads

MIUI 12

This update was launched with Android 11 and insisted on the dark mode, but also on the customization options of the mobile, the Super Wallpapers are in the lead. This is everything that accompanied the release of this version:

  • dark mode 2.0
  • New gestures and animations
  • new icons
  • New notification tone
  • Automatic answers for calls
  • Revamped app drawer
  • More privacy options
  • Permit Changes
  • floating windows
  • Revamped ultra battery saving mode
  • Lite mode
  • New video toolbox.
  • New fingerprint animations for on-screen sensors
  • New camera and gallery filters
  • New redesigned app vault

Unfortunately, this has been one of the operating systems most criticized by users, which is why the manufacturer was forced to release an intermediate version in the form of MIUI 12.5 . This update was also based on Android 11 and, mainly, corrected operating errors of the previous version, but also took the opportunity to add these features:

  • Nature sounds for notifications
  • smoother animations
  • Redesigned app folders
  • Multitasking redesign
  • Notes Improvements
  • new wallpapers
  • Possibility to perform a heart rate measurement with the camera

MIUI 13

And so on until you reach MIUI 13 , the most recent version of the Chinese firm’s operating system that, in addition to focusing on optimizing the software with respect to the hardware, is based on Android 12 and brings with it all these features:

  • Minor UI changes
  • new widgets
  • New Android 12 one-handed mode
  • New redesigned app vault
  • New font My Sans
  • Redesigned control center
  • New live wallpapers

miui 13

As you can see, there are not many features to highlight, as the company’s efforts were dedicated to not repeating the mistakes of the past. It is not clear if this time we will see an intermediate version, MIUI 13.5, or the next iteration of the brand’s software is already MIUI 14 , based on Android 13.

What about Android One?

As we have said, there is a policy of quarterly security updates for the vast majority of mobile phones of the brand, which are guaranteed for 2 or 3 years. But there are a number of phones that have, or rather had, a security update every month.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Android 11

Indeed, we are talking about the Xiaomi Mi A , maca phones that were launched years ago with Android One as the operating system and that, being part of the Google program, one of its advantages was to receive security patches before anyone else.

Unfortunately, this series of mobiles died with the Xiaomi Mi A3, a phone that has passed through the brand’s catalog with more pain than glory. They also had two years of updates guaranteed, but unless one day we see a Xiaomi Mi A4, we very much doubt that we will enjoy smartphones from the firm with Android One again.
