The iPhone 12 mini has turned out to be an intermittent success for Apple. It reaped good sales figures shortly after launching but soon stagnated until leading the industry to wonder if there would be a hypothetical iPhone 13 mini. Finally, this has been the case and it comes with quite a few changes compared to the model launched in 2020.
The Apple smartphone is again almost identical to the iPhone 13, changing dimensions, weight, screen and battery and maintaining the rest of the specifications, such as its processor, photographic system or operating system. This year it debuts a couple of pastel colors and changes the arrangement of the camera sensors.
The data sheet of the smallest of the new iPhone 13 makes it clear what we can expect from the phone.
Features of the iPhone 13 mini
Display and layout
Again we have an OLED Super Retina XDR panel with a composite flat edge design and Ceramic Shield front protection, with a size of 5.4 inches. The big news this year is in its notch, which is now about 20% smaller this year, according to Apple, and it is certainly remarkable. All iPhone 13 models are IP68 certified, which means that the 13 mini can survive up to twenty feet underwater for 30 minutes.
With a FullHD resolution of 2340 x 1080 px and a density of pixels per inch of 476, the smartphone has a 19.5: 9 aspect ratio and a classic 60 Hz refresh rate. It supports HDR and sports a contrast of 2,000,000: 1 along with a maximum brightness of 800 nits. The brand has taken care to maintain an oleophobic anti-fingerprint cover so that the screen does not get too dirty.
Performance
Apple is an expert in giving half information and again one more year we do not know the RAM memory of the phone. What we do know is that the 64 GB model is now being abandoned in favor of a 128 GB base model. If you want space to spare, we recommend you go for the 256 GB and 512 GB options, since Apple does not offer the possibility of incorporating a MicroSd card in their phones.
Maintaining 5G, both in SA and NSA networks, one of the great virtues of the phone is that it is the most powerful compact mobile on the market. And this is achieved thanks to the presence of the same processor that makes an appearance in its older brothers, that is, the A15 Bionic chip. Manufactured in 5 nanometers, it has plenty of power to run any game no matter how demanding it may be.
While the Pro models perform better across the board with their bigger GPUs and 50% more RAM, the just $ 800 mini puts up a serious fight in the market.
Camera
This year the iPhone 13 mini received several camera updates. The 12MP main camera has a larger sensor that lets in more light, improving photos in worse lighting conditions. There’s also optical sensor shift image stabilization, something Apple introduced in the iPhone 12 Pro Max that should help keep things even more stable than traditional OIS.
As for the 12MP wide-angle camera, it also has a larger sensor. Now there’s autofocus on board too, which can make a big difference in ensuring that landscape shots and other wide-field-of-view scenes come out sharp. Of course, the dual-tone LED flash is still present.
As for the video, no problem in recording clips in 4K at 24, 30 or 60 fps or with the front camera or with the rear camera. We can even record in Dolby Vision format, although only at 30 fps. Here we debut a cinematic mode, made possible by the improved neural engine in the A15 Bionic. Not only does it apply a bokeh effect to your video, but you can also dynamically change the focus depending on where your subject is in the frame or where you are looking.
This year Apple has released what in iOS 15 is called Photo Styles. You can think of them as realtime filters that come in four presets. You can select something that matches your personal taste and see how it looks while taking your shot.
On the front is a 12MP TrueDepth camera with ƒ / 2.2 aperture and the large Portrait modes with advanced bokeh effect and depth control. You can still use the Animoji and Memoji and unlock the mobile with your face, although not with a mask.
Battery
Apple never discloses the iPhone’s battery capabilities, but the company said it improved the iPhone 13 mini’s battery life by up to an hour and a half over its predecessor. In a teardown of the equipment it was discovered that the cell of the phone is 2438 mAH.
The phones of the Cupertino brand have never stood out for exceeding the day of use and no matter how much improvement the A15 chipset and the iOS 15 operating system introduce, do not expect wonders in this section.
Also remember that the phone comes to market without a charger and only has a Lightning to USB Type C cable in the box. With it and a compatible charger you can charge the phone to a maximum of 20 W with cable and if you want to do it wirelessly, MagSafe is still present, reaching 15 W
Differences with the iPhone 13
The screen is, without a doubt, the big change that differentiates both mobiles, being that of the mini model, logically, smaller. While the largest model measures 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.7 mm and weighs 174 grams, the smallest of the new iPhones is the smallest of the family, with dimensions of 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.7 millimeters and a negligible weight of 141 grams.
This is because its screen is almost an inch lower. If the iPhone 13 mounts a 6.1-inch monitor, with 1170 x 2532 pixels, the same Super Retina XDR OLED panel shrinks to a size of 5.4 inches, with 1080 x 2340p resolution in the model that stars in this data sheet.
Being smaller, the space dedicated to the battery inside is also reduced, so the energy component, not the autonomy, will also be different in the two phones. These versions of iPhone 13 have 20 W fast charging and 7.5 W Qi wireless charging but the cells are 3240 mAh and 2438 mAh respectively.
Price of iPhone 13 mini
As with its older brother, we have the possibility of buying the iPhone 13 mini in Spain in 5 different colors: red, white, black, blue and pink. Again none of them will have the charger included in the sales box.
