Alienware Concept U: New Portable Gaming PC

alienware-concept-uDell and Alienware do not fail. If there is an important technological event or fair in sight, there they are to talk about computers and show the odd product. This time it was the turn of the Alienware Concept UFO , a merger between a PC and a Nintendo Switch. And what do you want us to say, the idea is great even if it’s not really novel.

Alienware Concept UFO, the PC that wanted to be Switch

The idea of what a computer is or has not been blurring for years. There are more and more devices capable of operating identically or similarly, and also computers that want to recover the terrain that consoles ate in a matter of video games.

The new concept of Dell and Alienware, because there are no real plans to launch it in the short or medium term, is a portable Gaming PC with a design that nothing else to see it will be highly familiar. Exactly, without any repair, here Dell has shot the idea of the Nintendo Switch to create a small computer with controls that can be removed to use this proposal of gaming equipment both portable and anchored to a screen of greater diagonal.

Of this proposal we do not have much data, the manufacturer itself has not provided them because it is not something that they will put on the market immediately. In addition, it is logical to think that there are many details that should be considered and valued beyond whether or not it resembles the Nintendo console. Even so, they said they had a 10-generation Intel Core processor and a screen with touch functions and a resolution of 1900 x 1200 pixels and 8 inches diagonally.

Of course, the most striking is that it also includes controls that can be decoupled as in the Switch to use the laptop while playing in a more traditional way. Moreover, it could even be connected to a kind of Dock or HUB that would have an output for an external television or monitor. This would turn this laptop into a desktop computer.

The only tests of who could use it during CES 2020 were performed with games such as Rocket League and Mortal Kombat 11.

Is it possible to put a complete and gaming PC in such dimensions?

Alienware Concept UFO

Does a PC gaming really fit in such dimensions? That is the question you ask yourself when you see the idea of Alienware. There is no doubt that technology is advancing and that components such as CPUs and GPUs are improving in power, energy efficiency and reducing their dimensions. The problem is that when one thinks of a PC Gaming it is logical to imagine equipment with, at the start, a larger size to offer a more capable cooling system.

This UFO Concept has a weight three times that of the Switch. But if, as they say, it is capable of running triple A games, it is clear that it will need power and that translates into greater energy consumption. Therefore, starting the battery could be his Achilles heel, and to have it always plugged in, he loses his grace against other options such as the Intel NUC.

However, for now it is a product without plans to be released for sale by Dell. So we stay with the interesting thing, which is to see that you are experimenting with other types of solutions. So that the day comes when you don’t need super bulky and heavy “laptops” to have a really capable gaming machine. Of course, the same does not need a laptop if solutions such as Stadia and similar progress as promised.
