Adjust Mouse Sensitivity by Software or Windows, Which is Better?

Almost all mice on the market have the possibility of adjusting their sensitivity using specific software, and even with those that we will not be able to configure it to our liking thanks to the Windows settings. There are also mice that even have predefined profiles in memory to adjust the sensitivity without the need for software, so we raised the question: do you need the mouse software to change the sensitivity? Which option is the most suitable?

Being able to change the sensitivity of the mouse sensor is necessary for almost all users, as it is the way they can feel comfortable using it. Not everyone uses the same sensitivity, and although most use sensitivities between 800 and 1600 DPI, the usual thing is that each user has a “favorite” figure that you should always adjust beforehand.

Adjust Mouse Sensitivity by Software or Windows

Adjust mouse sensitivity in Windows?

Except for some cases in very old mice, we can always change the sensitivity of the mouse through Windows. Just go to Settings -> Devices -> Mouse and click on the “Additional mouse options” button on the right. In the third tab, “Pointer Options” you will see a scroll bar to select the “pointer speed”, which is nothing more than adjusting the sensitivity.

You must bear in mind, however, that this Windows setting is purely by software and works independently of the sensor that your mouse has, but it is an artificial increase or reduction of DPI and that it also does not give you exact figures, but works in percentage mode. With the midpoint selected, let’s say it represents the currently selected DPIs on your mouse, and when you lower or raise the scroll bar, it will increase or decrease the sensitivity in percentage mode; In other words, if your mouse is 1000 DPI and you lower the bar to a quarter, it will be working at 500 DPI approximately.

The software of your mouse, always better than through Windows

The biggest difference between using the Windows options or the specific software of your mouse to adjust the sensitivity is that the Windows part is generic and totally by software, while if you use the software of your mouse the change, even if it is by software, is at a low level since it is able to communicate with the sensor to operate at a higher or lower sensitivity. In other words, the sensitivity change is in the sensor, not in the software, so it is a much finer adjustment and in which precision is not lost when doing it.

In addition, there are many mice that have internal memory and that allow not having to depend on the software to be able to adjust their sensitivity, which is always an advantage in terms of performance and response speed of the mouse.

As we mentioned at the beginning, there are also mice that come with pre-configured sensitivity profiles that cannot be modified; This is worse than using the mouse software, since it allows a much “finer” adjustment and according to the user’s preferences, but even so the change is better than doing it with the Windows settings, something that you should definitely only use as a last resort .
