A blurry photo, a black preview and a Camera app that will not open are different problems. Start by identifying which one you have. Then try a few simple checks before resetting settings or assuming the camera needs replacing.

If photos are blurry or washed out
- Clean the lens gently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Remove a case or lens cover that might block the camera or cause reflections.
- Take a test photo in good light, with the phone held steady.
- Tap the subject to focus and move farther away if you are very close.
- Compare the main camera and other lenses, where available.
Use a still subject for this test. A moving person in a dark room is much harder to diagnose than a stationary object in daylight.

Huawei‘s guidance on noisy and overexposed photos explains how dim lighting and strong backlight affect the result. Changing angle or improving light may help more than a software reset. A Night mode can help suitable scenes, but it cannot make every moving subject sharp.
If the camera will not open
Close any app that may be using the camera, such as a video call or scanner, then restart the phone. Test the built-in Camera app before testing social media apps again.
| Result | Next check |
|---|---|
| Camera works, but one other app fails | Check that app’s camera permission and available updates. |
| Every app fails | Continue with camera settings, system updates and manufacturer support. |
| Only one lens stays black or cannot focus | Record the affected lens and seek model-specific help if it persists. |
| The issue began after a drop or liquid exposure | Arrange assessment rather than repeatedly changing software settings. |
A successful test in one app is useful evidence; it does not prove every camera component is healthy. Huawei provides a camera-will-not-open checklist covering app settings, restarts and system updates.
Reset Camera settings, rather than the whole phone
If the Camera app opens, look in its settings for Restore defaults. If it does not, your model may offer Settings > Apps > Camera > Storage > Clear data. Huawei describes this as resetting Camera settings rather than deleting your photo library.
Read the confirmation screen carefully and select Camera, not Gallery or a storage-cleaning tool. Menu names differ across EMUI, HarmonyOS, models and regions. Back up important photos as a normal precaution before broader troubleshooting.

Check updates and available storage
Install official system and app updates offered for the device. If storage is nearly full, move backed-up files or remove items you no longer need. Do not delete unfamiliar system folders or install a firmware downgrade tool as a routine camera fix.
Also distinguish the stock Camera app from a separate tool, such as a camera translation app. If only one tool misbehaves, investigate that app and its permissions before resetting the whole device.
When to get help
If basic tests fail, note the model, system version, error message and whether the front, main or another camera is affected. Use Huawei’s support service for your region. A technician can assess damage and hardware faults that settings cannot fix.
FAQs
Will clearing Camera data delete my photos?
Huawei describes its Camera clear-data step as resetting camera settings. Check that you selected the Camera app and read your device’s prompt.
Should I factory-reset the phone first?
No. Start with lens, app, restart and settings checks. A full reset is a separate step that requires proper backups.
Why is the preview good but my shared photo blurry?
Compare the saved original in Gallery with the shared copy. An app’s resizing or compression may be involved.
Can an update fix physical camera damage?
No software update can repair a cracked lens or damaged hardware. Get the device assessed if there is visible damage or persistent lens-specific failure.
