A SIM tray should release with the correct eject tool and controlled pressure. If it does not, stop before using more force. A bent tray, poorly seated card or damaged mechanism can become a larger repair if you try to pry it out.

Confirm that the phone has a physical tray
Some phone models or regional versions use eSIM without a physical SIM slot. Look up the exact model’s diagram first. A small hole on the edge can be a microphone opening rather than a tray release.
Remove a case that covers the tray and work on a clean, well-lit surface. Follow the phone maker’s instructions about switching the device off before removing the SIM. If the phone is swollen, unusually hot or visibly damaged, stop and arrange service.
Use the correct opening and tool
- Find the tray outline and its eject hole in the manufacturer’s diagram.
- Use the supplied eject pin, held straight in the correct hole.
- Apply gentle, controlled pressure in the direction documented for the model.
- If the tray releases normally, withdraw it carefully and note the card’s orientation.
- If it will not release, stop instead of twisting the tool or pulling at the edge.
Apple‘s SIM removal instructions allow a paper clip or eject tool for applicable iPhones and advise getting help if the tray is difficult to eject. That is not permission to force an improvised sharp object into any phone opening.
Common causes and what to do
| What you notice | Practical response |
|---|---|
| The case covers part of the tray | Remove the case and check the opening again. |
| The tray moves slightly then catches | Stop; a card or tray may be misaligned. |
| The tray or eject pin is bent | Do not straighten it inside the phone. |
| The phone has been dropped or exposed to liquid | Tell the repair service before further attempts. |
Do not hit the phone, insert glue, wedge a blade under the tray or pull on exposed contacts. These actions can damage the frame, sealing, card reader or other nearby parts. There is no universal home technique for a tray trapped by internal damage.
Get help when the normal release fails
Contact the manufacturer, carrier or an authorized repair provider. Explain what tool you used and whether the tray moved. Repair cost and warranty coverage depend on the model, damage and local service terms; a fixed price would be misleading.
If you only need to restore mobile service, ask your carrier about a replacement SIM or supported eSIM transfer. That does not repair the tray, but it may help you use a different device while arranging service.
Check the card before reinserting it
Use the correct tray for the phone, seat the right-size card flat and follow its orientation markings. A shared SIM/microSD tray needs both cards positioned correctly. Memory-card connections are a separate topic; our SD-card reader guide explains external readers.
For an iPhone that uses eSIM, start with Apple’s eSIM information and your carrier’s supported setup route.
FAQs
Can I push harder if the tray does not open?
Stop if normal, controlled pressure does not release it. More force can worsen a jam.
Can I use a paper clip?
Only if the manufacturer permits it and it fits correctly. Avoid sharp, oversized or easily broken objects.
What if I used the microphone hole by mistake?
Stop probing and consult the manufacturer if you suspect damage or notice an audio problem.
Will a carrier replace the SIM while the tray is stuck?
Ask the carrier about a replacement or supported eSIM. Availability depends on the device and account.
