Operators Will Deploy 5G Faster and with Fewer Antennas

5G operates in different bands depending on what you want to prioritize: speed or coverage . 5G will operate in the short, medium and long-range bands, and now Samsung has designed an innovation that will allow double the bandwidth to be used in the middle bands for greater deployment.

The lower a frequency, the longer its range. That is the reason that 700 MHz will be key in the expansion of 5G. However, the average band between 3.4 and 3.8 GHz is currently playing a key role, since it is where the 5G signal is currently being deployed and emitted by the large operators.

Now, in these medium frequencies, Samsung has developed a new radio technology that increases the bandwidth available to operators, increasing the capacity and speed of 5G deployments, and improving the user experience.

Thus, currently, the bandwidth used by 5G antennas is 200 MHz , but Samsung’s innovation will allow this figure to be doubled to 400 MHz . With this, it is possible to maximize the utility of the mid-frequency bands using less equipment .

Among the situations in which this is a great advantage we find, for example, when an operator has 400 MHz of non-contiguous bandwidth. In addition, it is also a great solution for the RAN , where one operator shares infrastructure with another. Thanks to this, where there was now one operator per antenna, now there can be two using the same antenna and the same 200 MHz spectrum as before.

If we take into account that the operators currently have almost 400 MHz of spectrum between 3.4 and 3.8 GHz, we have that all operators can offer 5G using the same antenna, something ideal to accelerate deployments in towns and areas where there is only an antenna.

The first compatible antennas will be on sale in 2022

This improvement will only apply to the mid-frequencies, which currently offer the best balance between speed, range and low latency, key characteristics of 5G. The first commercial devices with this technology will be available in early 2022 .

Samsung recently announced another 5G enhancement called Mobility Enhancer . This AI-based technology improves beamforming performance in 5G antennas, being able to direct the signal more efficiently towards mobile devices and improving performance by 30% in antennas with the same characteristics.
