Error 0x204 means the Remote Desktop connection could not be established. Start with the remote PC, its network address and the connection route. The message alone does not identify a broken Windows installation or prove that your password is wrong.

Check the computer you want to reach
- Make sure the remote PC is switched on, awake and connected to the network.
- On that PC, open Settings → System → About and check its Windows edition.
- Open Settings → System → Remote Desktop and check that remote access is enabled.
- Confirm that your account is permitted to connect. Use an account you are authorized to access.
- Note the PC name and the address you normally use, rather than guessing them from an old screenshot.
Microsoft‘s Remote Desktop setup guide explains the host requirements. Windows Home can be a client, but it does not provide the built-in incoming Remote Desktop host. Our Windows Home-to-Pro guide explains the edition difference.
Separate a local-network problem from an outside connection
| What happens | What to check next |
|---|---|
| It fails even on the same home network. | PC address, sleep state, host settings and the Remote Desktop firewall rule. |
| It works at home but fails elsewhere. | The approved VPN or Remote Desktop Gateway and the address it requires. |
| It reaches the sign-in screen but rejects the account. | Username, account permission and any recently changed password. |
| Only one client device fails. | That device’s connection profile, app version and network permissions. |
A private home-network address is not normally reachable directly from a hotel or mobile connection. Connect through the route your organization or network owner provides. Do not expose the PC by blindly forwarding port 3389 or switching off the firewall.
Check Windows App or the Mac client
Use the supported client for your platform. Microsoft now directs macOS users to Windows App. Check the saved PC name, gateway and user details. If you recreate a connection profile, record its settings first so you can restore them.
On a Mac, review the app’s Local Network permission if macOS offers that control. If a work VPN is required, confirm that it is connected before trying the desktop. A working public website does not prove that the private PC is reachable.
Check the firewall without disabling protection
Microsoft’s connection FAQ covers blocked ports, host setup and VPN access. Review the Remote Desktop exception for the appropriate network profile, or ask the administrator. Keep Network Level Authentication enabled unless your administrator provides a specific supported reason to change it.
If you only need attended help with another person’s PC, Windows Quick Assist may be a better fit than configuring an unattended Remote Desktop host. If the error remains, record the full message, client version and whether a same-network test works. Those details are more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
Frequently asked questions
Can Windows Home receive a built-in Remote Desktop connection?
No. Windows Home can connect as a client, but it does not include the built-in incoming Remote Desktop host.
Does error 0x204 always mean the password is wrong?
No. Check reachability and host setup first. A separate sign-in error can point to credentials or account permission.
Why does it work at home but fail away from home?
The private PC may only be reachable on your home network. Use the approved VPN or gateway for outside access.
Should I turn off the firewall to fix it?
Review the specific Remote Desktop rule and network profile instead. Do not leave the firewall disabled or expose the PC directly to the internet.
