You do not always need an adapter carrying the same logo as your phone. You need a correctly specified, compliant charger and cable. Matching the connector is the first check; matching the charging protocol determines whether you get the supported fast-charge rate.
Three specifications to read
- Connector: check both ends of the cable. A USB-C phone and a USB-A wall adapter may work together, but not necessarily at the same rate as USB-C to USB-C.
- Protocol: USB Power Delivery and PPS are standardized options. Some phones’ headline charging rates use proprietary protocols and require a matching adapter and cable.
- Output and cable rating: check available voltage/current profiles and the cable required by the manufacturer, rather than multiplying a brand’s largest advertised number.
Use brand guidance for the exact phone
For Pixel devices, Google’s charging instructions describe compatible PD/PPS choices. Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO and OnePlus model families can have different requirements even within the same brand. Read the phone’s local specifications and the adapter label before assuming that one “original charger” fits all models.
Apple devices also vary by generation and connector. Do not reuse a historical list of Lightning-era accessories as a catalog for every current iPhone. Check the cable you already have and whether the box includes an adapter.
Higher wattage and multi-port chargers
With compatible negotiated charging, a higher-rated adapter offers capacity; the phone determines how much it accepts. A laptop charger may be suitable when its documented profiles match, but the wattage alone does not establish compatibility.
Multi-port chargers often redistribute power when another device is connected. Inspect the manufacturer’s allocation table, including which port supports PPS. See our Pixel charger comparison for examples of single- and dual-port specifications.
Purchase and use checks
Buy from an identifiable seller, check the plug and regional certification, and replace damaged cables or adapters. A counterfeit can imitate an original logo. Stop using equipment that is damaged or behaves abnormally, and follow the device maker’s instructions.
Charging performance is separate from photo quality: if buying a phone, compare the whole package in our camera-phone buying guide, including any charger cost.
