If VoLTE is off and calls are not coming through, check that your phone and mobile line support your carrier’s 4G calling service. A working LTE data connection does not, by itself, prove that voice calls are set up correctly. A missing VoLTE switch can also mean the carrier manages it automatically.

VoLTE means voice calls over LTE, the 4G network. Where older voice networks have closed, a phone may need working VoLTE to make ordinary cellular calls. Requirements depend on the carrier, exact phone model and software.
Check these before changing advanced settings
- Check the carrier’s service-status page and test in a location with reliable coverage.
- Restart the phone or briefly turn Airplane Mode on and off.
- Install the phone’s supported software updates.
- Check the SIM or eSIM line used for calls, especially on a dual-SIM phone.
- Ask the carrier whether your exact model and line are enabled for VoLTE.
Where is the VoLTE setting?
| Phone | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Samsung and similar Android phones | Settings → Connections or Network & internet → Mobile networks or SIMs. Look for VoLTE calls or 4G Calling if available. |
| Other Android models | The selected SIM’s call/network settings or the maker’s device guide. Some carriers hide the switch. |
| iPhone | Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data → the relevant line → Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data. Available LTE/5G/VoLTE controls vary. |
T-Mobile’s device guidance gives examples and notes that VoLTE is always enabled when available on some models. Use your own carrier’s instructions; do not assume every phone has a separate toggle.
An option called “mobile data during calls” is not a universal VoLTE switch. Choosing LTE as a network mode also does not fix an incompatible device or a line that the carrier has not set up for voice.
What if the VoLTE option is missing?
Check the exact model, region and carrier software, then ask whether the phone is supported on that network. A phone sold in another country can support LTE data but still have calling limits with a different carrier.
On iPhone, open Settings → General → About while connected and follow any carrier-update prompt. See Apple’s carrier settings instructions. Avoid unknown dialer codes or modified firmware advertised as universal VoLTE fixes.
VoLTE service error: what should you tell the carrier?
Record the exact message, phone model, software version and whether incoming calls, outgoing calls or both fail. Ask support to check the line’s voice-service setup, device compatibility and SIM. Replacing or reactivating a SIM may be needed in some cases, but the carrier should confirm that first.
If only incoming calls or one person’s calls fail
Check Focus or Do Not Disturb, blocked numbers, call forwarding and unknown-caller settings. These can affect ringing even when VoLTE works. Apple’s calling guide separates these checks from network and account faults.
For a narrower calling problem, use our cannot-call checklist. Do not factory-reset the phone as the first step. A network-settings reset also removes saved network information, so read its effects before using it.
