If you cannot add a card to Apple Pay, first check that the exact card, issuer, device and country are supported. Update the device, confirm its passcode and Apple Account security settings, and note the exact error. Your bank or card issuer decides whether a card can be added; Apple does not approve or decline it.

Check the basics before adding the card again
- Use a device and country or region that support Apple Pay.
- Ask your issuer whether your specific card is supported, not just whether the bank offers Apple Pay.
- Install the current software update available for the device.
- Set a device passcode and check that two-factor authentication is enabled for your Apple Account.
- Check your connection and Apple’s service status.
These checks are covered in Apple’s card-addition troubleshooting guide. A working plastic card does not automatically mean that every digital-wallet feature is supported.
What does the error message mean?
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Could Not Add Card | Check the basic requirements, then contact the issuer if it continues. |
| Invalid Card | Check the entered details and ask the issuer about eligibility. |
| Card Device Limit | Ask the issuer to check the devices or tokens registered for that card. |
| Verification or activation pending | Complete the issuer’s verification steps and ask it about a delay. |
| Security or Apple Account restriction | Follow the account-specific support instructions shown. |
Repeatedly removing and adding the same card is not a substitute for resolving an issuer restriction. Keep a note of the message and when it appears.
Adding a new card versus a previously used card
Open Wallet and use the Add Card control, then follow the setup shown for your device. You may see previously used cards under a label such as Previous Cards or Cards Found For You. Selecting one can save re-entering details, but it does not bypass eligibility or bank verification.
Apple explains the normal flow in its Apple Pay setup guide. A card already working on one device may need separate setup and verification on another.
Why is the card stuck on activating?
Look for a verification request in Wallet or the bank’s own app. If the provided phone number is outdated, a code never arrives or activation has been pending much longer than the issuer expects, contact the issuer using its official app or the number on the card. Avoid sharing full card details or verification codes in a public comment.
An Apple Account restriction is a different issue. Apple also documents security-related card-addition restrictions; a factory reset should not be the first troubleshooting step.
Card added, but payment still fails?
That is a separate stage. The shop, terminal, selected card or payment approval may need checking. See our Apple Pay payment-error guide. If you simply want to change the card selected first, use our default-card guide instead of deleting all your cards.
