Currently, Android TV already allows users to make video and voice calls using Google Meet. However, the upcoming version of the operating system may introduce a new feature that enables users to receive notifications and phone calls from other compatible applications directly on their smart TVs.
The concept of answering calls from various devices is not entirely new, as we can already receive and converse through tablets, smartphones, and even smartwatches. Similarly, with Android Smart TVs, using Google Meet (previously known as Duo), users have the capability to engage in video calls. However, the exciting addition would be the ability to answer phone calls from compatible apps and receive notifications, expanding the range of applications beyond those provided by the TV manufacturer.

In the first beta of Android TV 14
With Google Meet, formerly known as Duo, users already have the capability to make video and group calls as desired. All that is required is a microphone and camera, unless they are already integrated into the Smart TV with Android TV. However, the exciting development here is the ability to receive calls from other compatible apps and view call notifications, a feature that was previously lacking in the manufacturer’s smart TV software.
Google is currently testing the initial beta version of Android TV 14 specifically for smart TVs. This means that the new functionality being tested is still in its early stages, and only users participating in the beta program will have the opportunity to try it out.
Mishaal Rahman, a user who discovered these new features, shared his findings on Twitter. In a series of tweets, he summarized the various enhancements present in the first beta of Android 14 for Smart TVs. Of all the new features, the most notable is the inclusion of call notifications and the ability to receive them on smart TVs running this software.
Calls when you are in your profile
If the call feature for smart TVs is included in the final version of Android 14, it will provide another option for users who want to answer calls while watching TV. However, it’s important to note that calls will not always interrupt the viewing experience.
The availability of calls will depend on whether you are logged into your personal profile on the Smart TV. If you are using a different profile, you will not receive incoming calls or notifications. This ensures the privacy of the individual users who utilize Android-based Smart TVs.
It’s worth mentioning that Android TV is not the only operating system offering this feature. Apple has recently announced its plans to bring FaceTime to tvOS 17 and Apple TV 4K. This means that both operating systems are competing to provide this tool to users as soon as possible.
