It is not the first time that we talk about a detection system for earthquakes and other natural disasters for Xiaomi phones . This function has been available for years on the mobile phones of the Chinese firm. Despite its great success, Xiaomi is now working on improving this function based on it in the hardware of its phones.
We know that it is very difficult to detect an earthquake in time, to the point that this early warning is capable of avoiding a difficult situation and allows us to evacuate ahead of time. There are no methods, especially in the hardware of a mobile phone, to detect an earthquake in good time, but the system is gradually being polished.
Detection through the hardware of Xiaomi mobiles
As we said, this alert function for earthquakes and other natural disasters has been available on Xiaomi phones for several years. The Chinese firm assures that thanks to its collaboration with high-tech disaster mitigation institutes they have successfully warned about 35 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or more , having sent more than 12 million warning messages to people about these events. But now the Chinese firm is working on improving this detection of natural disasters, thanks to the use of a new method.
Now Xiaomi has revealed that this earthquake detection technology will change completely in its mobiles, to make these phones part of the earthquake detection network, at least in China.
If until now the earthquake alert was based on the information and alerts received from the local Seismology Institutes, Xiaomi’s idea now is to add new sensors to their phones. With two new sensors, the phones could analyze vibrations and detect the existence of an active earthquake. In this way, the phones of the Chinese firm would become authentic seismometers, based on specific hardware, and not on software to detect it or third-party alert center.
In addition to the new hardware that the phones would integrate in the form of sensors, algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence and neural networks would be used, to be able to discern in real time if it is a simple vibration or something related to a real earthquake. Of course, at the moment it is a function that would be available only in China. More and more devices offer this type of information, such as Google, which wants to standardize it by adding it to various Android devices. Also in a similar way, using the phone’s own sensors to detect them. Of course, we do not know if, as in the case of Xiaomi mobiles, it will force to add new hardware in the form of more sensors to be able to detect earthquakes in time. The ultimate goal is that with billions of mobile phones of this type active it will be possible to detect earthquakes earlier.
