What is a Wi-Fi Bridge and How it Improves Coverage

Wireless networks are increasingly used by users. A few years ago it was normal to browse through a computer connected by cable to the router. However this has changed and today we have many mobile devices with the ability to connect to a Wi-Fi network easily. There are different equipment and methods that allow us to connect, since there are amplifiers, PLCs, routers of greater or less power, etc. In this article we are going to talk about what a Wi-Fi bridge is and how it can improve our wireless connections.

Wi-Fi coverage, something fundamental

For wireless networks to work properly, you must have acceptable Wi-Fi coverage . Otherwise we could have problems navigating, connection failures and stability.

Wi-Fi Bridge and How it Improves Coverage

We have at our disposal different types of devices and technologies that allow us to expand or improve Wi-Fi coverage. Some teams offer us the possibility to connect from further distances from the router without having problems.

One of these options that we have is what is known as a Wi-Fi bridge . The objective is none other than to offer users the possibility to navigate from other places in the home, even if they are far from the main router, without seeing how coverage is a problem.

Let’s see what is known as the Wi-Fi bridge. What can this technology do to improve our connections.

What is a Wi-Fi bridge

A Wi-Fi bridge or also known as a Wi-Fi Bridge will allow us to surf wirelessly without worrying so much about the distance to the router and not losing Internet speed.

The term Wi-Fi bridge refers to the joining of two routers . These two routers are connected via wireless network. In this way a bridge is created between both teams and the signal goes from one place to another. So we can connect to that second router and be able to have a connection with more guarantees than if we connect directly to the main router, which is far away.

One of the devices, the main one, acts as a sender; the other, the secondary, receives that signal. Also known as base and satellite. The latter, the secondary one, is placed in the place where there are connection problems and we want to amplify the coverage. For example, if the signal reaches a room in the home is weak, we can use a Wi-Fi bridge.

For a Wi-Fi bridge to be viable it is necessary to have two compatible routers. We have indicated that one of them emits the signal and the other receives it to later serve as an access point to other equipment.

A Wi-Fi bridge can have problems too

However, keep in mind that a Wi-Fi bridge is not always the best solution to take the Internet from one place to another. We are talking about that the signal is still wireless, although logically from one router to another there is greater capacity than doing it directly from a router to another device that has an antenna with less powerful conditions.

This means that if the distance is very large and the signal is weak, we would still have problems navigating. In that case we can choose to carry the signal via cable or use other devices such as PLC.

However, a Wi-Fi bridge is an interesting option if we want to improve the wireless signal in certain areas of our house. It is a way, in short, to be able to connect from other devices that may have problems.

As we have indicated, it will be necessary to have two compatible routers that are connected to each other. In this way we can carry the signal from one point to another and be able to connect from other equipment.

But there are also Wi-Fi bridges that are specific devices . The operation is the same, except that in this case we do not use routers: one of them connects to the main router and wirelessly sends the signal to the second device.
