Wi-Fi Doesn’t Connect Automatically: How to Fix

Wireless networks are increasingly present in our day to day. We have a large number of devices that we can connect to the Internet without using a cable. Desktops, the computers we use in our homes, can be connected both by cable and wirelessly. The latter has gained a lot of weight in recent years, although it is true that it causes problems at times. In this article we will explain how to fix the problem when Windows does not automatically connect to a Wi-Fi network .

Windows does not automatically connect to a Wi-Fi network

This is something that happens to many users and it is a problem. We turn on the computer and try to surf the Internet but we see that we have no connection . We have to search the Wi-Fi network and connect manually. Unlike the cable that does connect automatically, this can be a problem for users.

Wi-Fi Doesn't Connect Automatically

It is something that we would keep in mind every day. Every time we turn on our computer we would have to connect manually. A constant waste of time and that also prevents us from having a connection in the event of an automatic restart due to an update or similar action.

The causes of this problem can be various. Sometimes it is simply a configuration problem, in others a recent update that has generated problems, failures with the network card … Let’s see what we can do to solve the problem when Windows does not automatically connect to Wi-Fi.

Check the option to connect automatically

A very basic and simple matter to carry out is to check the option to connect automatically . If we want our equipment to connect to a Wi-Fi network as soon as it detects it and is available, when connecting we must check the box so that it always connects automatically.

Marcar la opción de conectarse automáticamente

When we mark this option, it will ask us for the password to be able to connect and from that moment on our equipment will always connect when that network is available.

Forget the network

Sometimes this previous step that we mentioned is useless. We mark it but we see that it still does not connect automatically. What we have to do is give it to forget the network , within the configuration. Just go to the Wi-Fi icon that appears at the bottom right, in the Windows task bar, and when we have the specific network in front of us, we click with the second mouse button and click Stop remembering.

By doing this it is as if we have never connected to that network before. Now what we do is the same previous step: check the box to connect automatically and we give it to connect, putting the password again.

Control Panel

We can also configure it through the Control Panel . To do this, we simply go to Start, write Control Panel and open it. Later we go to Network and Internet, Center of networks and shared resources and there we click on the wireless network to which we are connected.

When we are inside we must go to Wireless Properties. Here you have to check the box to Connect automatically when this network is within range.

Update the network card

Sometimes problems can also arise with the card drivers . This can happen after a system update, for example, or if that computer is new and we have not previously installed the drivers.

The solution may simply be to update the drivers for the wireless network card. To do this we click with the second button of the mouse on Start, we go to Device Manager, Network adapters and there we right-click on the network card and click Update driver.

Actualizar drivers de la tarjeta de red

Additionally, we can also disable that network card and re-enable it. In this way we sometimes solve problems of this type.

Delete files from the Wlansvc directory

It may happen that we have many networks to which we have connected or that there has been a conflict with the files in the Wlansvc directory. In this case what we have to do is delete it.

To do this we have to press the Windows + R key combination, run services.msc, go to Automatic WLAN configuration and right-click to click Stop.

Configuración automática WLAN

When we have done this we have to go to Program Files, Microsoft, we go to the Wlansvc directory and delete the files.

Look for possible threats

One more issue is the possibility that there is some type of malware on our computer that affects the proper functioning of wireless connections. This could cause Wi-Fi not to connect automatically in Windows.

There are many security tools that we can use. There are many types of malware that could affect us in one way or another and should be avoided.
