Whether it’s the immediate urge to silence the morning alarm, scrolling through social media as soon as you wake, or some other smartphone-related activity, numerous users find themselves reaching for their phones while in bed, both at bedtime and upon waking.
This practice, however, can have a detrimental impact on the quantity and quality of your nightly sleep, potentially leading to various health issues. We’re all aware of the vital role that sound sleep plays in maintaining our mental and physical well-being, and your phone’s presence can disrupt this. Yet, aside from its effects on our mental state, there are several other compelling reasons to exercise caution when it comes to smartphone usage in bed.

Sleeping with the smartphone is a risk
Numerous scientists have consistently issued warnings about the potential risks associated with frequent device usage, especially during nighttime hours. Those who habitually use their devices at night are more likely to experience inadequate and poor-quality sleep. Screens disrupt the natural sleep cycle or circadian rhythm, and the blue light emitted by cell phones hampers the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. Consequently, this interference can leave you feeling less alert and make it harder to fully wake up in the morning.
However, the dangers don’t stop there. Placing your phone between the sheets is an even riskier practice. While it’s a rare occurrence, there is a potential risk of your phone’s battery overheating and catching fire. An explosion or fire involving a phone in bed can result in far more extensive damage than in other scenarios. When we are asleep, we might not even be aware of such an incident, and bed sheets are highly flammable materials.

This concern is not unfounded, as reports have linked battery overheating to several cases of second-degree burns. Placing the phone under the blanket or pillow, especially in warmer weather, can prevent the phone’s heat from dissipating, potentially increasing the risk of an explosion or similar hazard.
Regarding electromagnetic waves, there hasn’t been conclusive research showing that mobile phone usage causes cancer or other severe diseases, despite longstanding concerns. In fact, the links between mobile phone use and health risks remain unclear. Generally, mobile phones are believed to emit such negligible doses of electromagnetic radiation that they are considered safe for use or for keeping near us while we sleep.
In light of these considerations, it’s advisable to keep your phone on the nightstand at bedtime and resist the urge to use it immediately upon waking in the morning.
