What is QuickTime?

It is a very simple application that will also provide you with various functions that will surely, at some point or another, be very useful to you. First of all, we can talk about QuickTime as a multimedia player, through which you can play the songs that you want and, of course, the files in video format that you have. In fact, by default, it is the application that macOS uses to play any video that you open from Finder.

As we have mentioned before, QuickTime is the program chosen by macOS by default to open video files. However, it is possible that if at any time you have installed another program that also allows this function, you have accepted that this program is chosen by default to open all video files. In this case, if you want to open a video with QuickTime, you just have to right-click on the file, select Open with and click on QuickTime, then the video will open and play with this application.

As is usually the case with all applications, QuickTime only supports certain video formats, these are listed below.

  • QuickTime movie (.mov).
  • MPEG-4 (.MP4, M4V).
  • MPEG-2 (OS X Lion or later).
  • MPEG-1.
  • 3GPP.

  • AVCHD (OS X Mountain Lion or later).

In the same way that you can use QuickTime to open and play video files, you can also use it to play audio files. However, in this case it is not the application that uses macOS by default, so now you will have to, necessarily, right-click on the file, click Open with, and select QuickTime. Again, this application only supports the audio files that are in the following formats.

  • iTunes Audio (.m4a, M4B, M4P, MP3).
  • Core Audio (.caf).
  • AIFF.
  • AU.
  • SD2.
  • WAV.
  • SND.
  • AMR.

Another of the most outstanding functions of this application is the possibility of recording the screen of your Mac very easily. To carry out this function, you just have to follow the steps indicated below.

  1. Open the QuickTime app on your Mac.
  2. Click, at the top left, in the top menu, on File.
  3. Click New Screen Recording
  4. In the menu that appears you will have to choose one of the options offered by the app to record the entire screen or a selected part or also take a screenshot.

Once the screen recording is finished, by default it will be saved on your Mac’s Desktop.

One of the most common uses of QuickTime is to record the audio that you can collect from the application itself. To carry out this action, you just have to follow the simple steps that we indicate below.

  1. Open QuickTime on your Mac.
  2. Click, at the top left, in the top menu, on File.
  3. Click New Audio Recording.
  4. In the displayed interface, click on the symbol that appears next to the record button to choose the source through which you want to collect the audio.
  5. Hit the record button.
  6. Once you want to finish, you just have to stop the recording and save it in the location you want.

It is surely the most forgotten function due to the poor image quality offered by the camera that nowadays today assemble Apple computers. However, if you buy a webcam that offers better image quality, this function can be very useful. To make a recording through the camera with QuickTime, you just have to follow the following steps.

  1. Open QuickTime on your Mac.
  2. Click, at the top left, in the top menu, on File.
  3. Click New Video Recording.
