The old Facebook Watch Party walkthrough in this article no longer works. You cannot bring it back by changing your group role or following the screenshots from 2020. To watch and discuss a video with friends, choose between sharing a video in a group, arranging a shared start time, or using a supported watch-together feature in a call. These do different things.
Watch Party, group posts and video calls are different
Facebook’s original Watch Party announcement describes a shared queue of Facebook videos with real-time discussion. It is historical documentation, not a current set of setup instructions.

Share a video that your group can actually open
- Open the original video or post and check its audience.
- Use Share to send it to the group if that option is available. Otherwise, copy the original link and put it in a new group post.
- Add a short description and, if you want a shared session, a start time with the time zone.
- Let another member test the link. Group privacy does not override the original video’s privacy.
- Use comments for discussion, or keep a separate chat or call open.
A video from a private profile or another private group may not be visible to everyone. Share a version that the owner has made available to the intended audience instead of downloading and reposting someone else’s video.
What about Messenger Watch Together?
Meta introduced Watch Together in Messenger as a separate calling feature. That 2020 announcement does not guarantee that every option, device or participant limit still applies today.
During a call, check the sharing options actually offered by your current app. If no suitable watch option appears, use a shared link and a countdown. Avoid installing an unofficial extension just to restore an old Facebook button.
Can you watch Netflix or any movie this way?
A Facebook group does not give its members access to a paid streaming service. Each viewer needs the access required by that service. Screen sharing can also produce a black video window when copy protection blocks it. Use the streaming service’s own supported sharing feature, where available.
