Use uTorrent Portable on a USB to Download Torrents

Surely we all have our computer adapted and configured according to our tastes and interests. After installing Windows, the first thing we usually do is start installing the applications we use often. And within these applications we will find, of course, the download managers and torrent clients . Our computer is usually always ready to download any file from the Internet. However, what happens when we have to download a file from a different computer than ours?

Using someone else’s computer doesn’t always make us feel comfortable. Other programs, other configurations, everything different … For this reason, it may be necessary to perform a task, such as downloading a file from the torrent network, which on our computer would take only a few minutes, on another computer it would take much longer.

uTorrent Portable

Luckily, if we are uTorrent users to download torrent files from the Internet, there is a trick that will allow us to feel more comfortable when using a computer that is not ours.

Advantages (and disadvantages) of using uTorrent on a USB

To be able to use most of the problems it is necessary to install them on the hard disk. The installation process configures and prepares the system to be able to use the program. However, it can be a waste of time when we need to use a program and it is not installed. uTorrent is, for example, one of these programs.

What many users do not know is that uTorrent can also be used in portable mode , that is, from an external hard drive or a USB memory. This will allow us to always have our torrent client at hand so that, whatever the computer to which we connect it, we can start downloading instantly. Without installing or configuring anything.

Unfortunately, using uTorrent in portable mode can also have some drawbacks. For example, the download path may not work on some computers (something we should check when opening the program). It can also happen that the updates are not installed correctly when they do not detect the trace of the previous installation.

Also, if we are downloading and saving the files to the USB, it is easy for this to run out of space, and all our downloads stop. The same as if we have several downloads (or uploads) started on another computer, the uTorrent portable will not be able to find them, and therefore it will start downloading again.

Install portable uTorrent on a hard drive or USB

The first thing to do is download the uTorrent installer from its main website . This way we will make sure that we are using the latest version, at least for now.

Once we have uTorrent on our PC, the next step will be to run the installer, and install the torrent client on our computer. We must be careful with the adware and the unwanted software that will try to sneak uTorrent.

Instalar uTorrent

When the installation finishes, we will open uTorrent and check that the torrent client works correctly. It is important to open it at least once on our PC so that the “settings.dat” file is created correctly and avoid configuration problems.

Next, what we must do is copy the entire installation of uTorrent from our computer to the USB memory or external hard drive where we are going to use it. The default installation directory of uTorrent on our PC is as follows:

C:Users[usuario]AppDataRoaminguTorrent

We must copy the entire “uTorrent” folder to the USB memory. Once copied, we can put it the name we want, without problem.

When the process ends, we will have our portable uTorrent ready. We can disconnect the USB memory from our computer and connect it to any other. By executing the file “uTorrent.exe”, we can see how uTorrent is executed on the computer, without the need to install anything.

The configuration will always be the same, since it is saved on the USB memory together with the program.

How to update uTorrent portable

To update this portable uTorrent we can do it in several ways. Of course, the program will offer us the possibility to download new versions as soon as they are available. However, doing it this way we run the risk of uTorrent being installed on the PC instead of the USB memory, and it is no longer portable.

The best way to update it is to install the new version of uTorrent on a computer and repeat the previous steps. That is, when the installation is finished, we will copy the uTorrent folder to the USB memory and that’s it. If we want to keep our settings intact, we simply have to keep the file “settings.dat” found inside the torrent download client directory.

Aspects to consider when using uTorrent portable

uTorrent portable will work the same on any computer where we connect it. However, we must be careful with the “drawbacks” that we have mentioned above. To make sure that we have no problems we must make sure that we comply with the following:

  • When we run uTorrent on a new PC we will have to create new rules in the firewall. Otherwise, you will not be able to connect to the Internet.
  • We must be careful with the port we use. If the port is closed, or is used by another program, we will have speed problems.
  • Beware of download routes. We must choose the path of each new download well to avoid that the downloads get half-filled or fill the USB memory inadvertently.

We must also make sure that the USB memory is not 100% full (since uTorrent needs some free space to work) and update our portable uTorrent periodically.
