As with the popular Windows, the Linux distributions used by millions on their computers can also be configured for multiple people on the same PC. With this, what we want to tell you is that, for example, in Ubuntu we have the possibility of creating several accounts, but at the same time we should take certain precautions related to security.
It is true that when we install any Linux distribution on our computer, as is the case with Ubuntu, at first we begin to use it ourselves. But later there is a possibility, quite common in these times, that new users who use this same operating system will be added. How could it be otherwise, as with other similar proposals, this distribution that we mentioned allows us to register several people.
But of course, when carrying out this type of movement we must take into consideration that all the data of each of these users is stored on the same disk and system. That is why when carrying out this type of multi- user management we should have some parameters to increase the security of the operating system. We are going to achieve all this that we are telling you through the open source system configuration window. We access it by clicking with the right mouse button on the desktop, where we select the Configuration option.
In the window that appears on the screen we find several options located in the left panel. In order to improve security with user accounts in Ubuntu, in the case at hand we place ourselves on the Users option .
Configure Ubuntu correctly for multiple users
The first thing we see here is the current user who acts as administrator and who is the main user in the Ubuntu operating system. To improve its security, on the right side of the window we see that we have an option that allows us to set a password . As you can imagine, this blocks access to our account to all those who start the computer.
In the event that we want to add other user accounts to the operating system , it is easy. In the upper right corner of this window we find a button that says Add user. The first thing we need to know here is that we have the possibility to establish a standard or administrator account . One type or another varies greatly depending on the permissions that we allow each person who will use the PC to give. In the event that we ourselves wish to remain administrators, we recommend using the standard account for the rest.
In the same way we should establish an access password for each of these new accounts that we are going to create. In fact, if we click on the Gear that appears to the right of the Password field, Ubuntu automatically generates a strong and secure password . This is something that we will have to repeat with all the people who are going to independently use this Linux computer.
It is also worth knowing that when the administrator wants to delete one of these accounts, he can easily do so. Simply click the Remove User button at the bottom of the window.
