The old iPhone vs iPhone 14: is it worth the change?

For many, changing the iPhone is silly due to the minimal improvements that exist from one generation to another . In fact, with the launch of the iPhone 14 family, social networks were flooded with memes that referred to the fact that the most recent models were practically identical.

The objective of this publication is to analyze the previous Apple mobiles and compare them with the current iPhone 14 to see if there are really significant news and, therefore, to assess if it is worth taking the leap. In this way, if any of you, our readers, are interested in buying the newest, you can find out without much complication.

The old iPhone vs iPhone 14

If you have a recent iPhone…

Apple has been heavily criticized by the community because the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 are the same smartphones, but with a different name and a higher price of 100 euros more. This is logical considering that there are only improvements when it comes to taking photos and for battery life, but nothing more, since it even has the same Apple A15 Bionic processor .

Things change a bit when we talk about the iPhone 12 , since there are already two years of difference between each one. On this occasion, the iPhone 14 does have a better chip, as well as a substantial improvement in autonomy. The performance will improve, but the question is whether the change is so palpable in hindsight. The rest of the specifications are maintained , such as a dual 12 MP camera and a Super Retina XDR OLED screen, although when using the first one you lose interesting functions such as Cinema Mode.

When the iPhone 11 comes into play, we already begin to see a greater difference, although it is not totally noticeable either. The iPhone 14 has a processor that is two generations ahead , also allowing autonomy of up to 9 more hours of video playback. Also, the older device’s screen uses an IPS LCD Liquid Retina panel that doesn’t display colors as vividly as the OLED-type Super Retina on newer versions.

With old models…

If with the iPhone 11 we have already begun to see a much more pronounced jump, when comparing it with an iPhone X , it is easy to see that there are even more changes. In this case, it integrates a Super Retina OLED panel again, but loses the IP68 rating against water and dust while integrating an A11 Bionic chip , that is, up to four generations apart.

On the other hand, we find the same 12 MP double camera that the iPhone 14 also has, but in terms of results it shows a clear discrepancy, especially in night scenarios. The battery reaches only 13 hours of video playback and in this sense there is a brutal change of up to 10 more hours with the iPhone 14.

The last model we are going to investigate is the iPhone 8 from 2017 , that is, 5 years have passed. A clear indication that the hardware has become outdated despite the fact that today it has iOS 16. However, it only has a single 12 MP rear camera and equips a 4.7-inch IPS panel , while the iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch panel that is much more visible to users. The processor is also an Apple A11 Bionic , so in terms of general performance you are going to notice it a lot and we are not even talking about the battery, because with the most current model you have up to 11 more hours of autonomy.

In short, buying the iPhone 14 is advisable in the case of having an iPhone 11 at most , because this is where you will notice the changes. Otherwise, opting for the iPhone 12 or 13 will seem to you that you have the same smartphone as before and on top of that you will have to pay more than what you previously paid for them.
