The new and controversial function of iOS 16 to pay for your purchases

WWDC 2022 is already forgotten, but as long as Apple does not release the final version of its mobile operating system, it is quite certain that we will be finding new software functions that the brand itself left in the inkwell during that presentation.

Even more so every time a new beta of the system arrives on our devices, as is the case with the second beta of iOS 16, which has been available for download for a couple of days, as long as you have a developer profile. It is precisely the latter that continue to quickly discover all kinds of great and ingenious features that Apple like making it easier for users to bypass annoying CAPTCHAs and verify their identity using their Apple ID instead.

However, there are other developments, which are not without controversy, as Mark Gurman advances through his Twitter.

Storing all possible bank details

Until now, in Apple Pay we could store our credit cards, with their number, expiration date and our name, but we had never been allowed to store the third data that is required when formalizing online purchases, the CVV.

Right now iOS 16 has the ability to automatically remember and fill in the CVV number when using your credit cards when shopping on the web, but not in Apple’s payment system, but in Safari, using the “Autofill” function. If you have a credit card number saved, you can simply enter the CVV (the 3-digit number on the back) and the rest of your credit card information will be filled in automatically.

This has led many users to be suspicious that Apple has so much information in its hands and to wonder if it is safe that absolutely all of their payment card data is stored in iOS, with the possibility of being at the reach of hackers or cybercriminals.

Actually, as Gurman points out, Apple had always been reluctant to store this data before , so it is not very clear why it has now taken this step. There will be those who find it much more comfortable and there will be those who do not give all the security in the world but, if so, it is enough not to use this function.

If you have the latest iOS 16 beta, you can access this new tool by opening the Settings app. From there, you have to go to the Safari menu, select the Autofill option and locate the Saved Credit Cards menu.
