As the saying goes: whoever plays with fire ends up burning. Well, that is what happened to this user’s drone that while recording the eruption of a volcano, it got too close and the device ended up as you can imagine: falling into the lava. Of course, both the video of the incident and the rest of the material were well worth it.
The drone that crashed into an erupting volcano

During the last months we have seen how several users captured incredible images with their drones, especially with models like the recent DJI FPV. And it is that these unmanned aerial vehicles allow to reach places that would otherwise be very difficult and, above all, risky.
However, with a drone you can afford certain licenses because the most that can happen is that you lose the device. Which is exactly what happened to Joey Helms, a videographer who was on the Icelandic Reykjanes peninsula to record the Fagradalsfjall volcano while it was erupting.
While he was flying his drone there was a moment when he got too close and the lava jets that expelled the crack upwards reached the drone that immediately stopped emitting the signal and, as you can guess, ended up falling into the lava and dying of life.
Of course, due to the proximity of the images, it was worth it. And the truth is that if one day you had to lose a drone, surely you would like it to be in similar conditions. Because it is quite a show what can be achieved with this type of product in a setting like this. Also, it is probably, next to the drone that also fell when it got too close to a tornado, one of the best ways to finish.
A loss that was worth it
Surely if you have found the accident images striking, you are wondering what the rest of the captured material will be like. Well, now you can see it in the new video posted on the same YouTube channel.
In the 4 minutes it lasts, you can practically appreciate really spectacular shots where the vibrant reds and oranges of the lava contrast with the blacks and grays of the volcanic pieces. A visual delight that will remind many of their own movie sequences such as those seen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy when Frodo approaches Mount Doom. Although there are many other references, but in most cases all of these are computer-generated images. Here all you see is real, it is a volcanic eruption that has occurred in Iceland.
Of course, the negative part of these videos captured with drones is that they are not available to everyone. And of course, when you compare with those that you record, it is like when you compared the videos recorded with an action camera like the GoPro while you were riding your bike through the mountains with those published by the brand for the presentation of the product.
But hey, it is also true that not all of us have a volcano a few miles from home. And it might be better this way, because it shouldn’t be reassuring to know that it could erupt at some point.
