Sony launches new features for PS5 and a model with some changes

PlayStation 5 is in the news again and this time it is not because of a new price increase to adjust for inflation, but because of news at the firmware level and the presence of a new model of the Sony console.

Starting today, if you have a PlayStation 5 you can get new features simply by updating your console.

Sony launches new features for PS5 and a model with some changes

In addition, as we have been able to learn through The Verge , a new PS5 model with slight changes is also beginning to be marketed. It is not a major update of the PS5 Pro-type hardware , but again the weight of the huge new generation console is cut and, in addition, it will consume less energy, something to be thankful for both to save on the electricity bill and to help in sustainability .

Under the 1200 numbering, this new PlayStation 5 model, which is already being sold in Australia, would weigh around half a kilo less and replace the 1100, the first revision since the initial print run.

Sony is using a new, smaller motherboard for the PS5 , different cooling, and has even changed the SSD case.

TL;DW – The PS5 1200 model is over 1 pound lighter than the launch model, pulls 20-30W less and delivers roughly the same noise/heat output.

Sony shrank almost everything including motherboard and the internal packaging to make it lighter and almost certainly cheaper (for them)

Furthermore, Sony has also moved a lot of components with this new motherboard design , which means that the CMOS battery is now completely hidden under the heatsink. Before it was more exposed and that made it easier to change, but now a PS5 will have to be completely disassembled to replace this component.

With all these changes, this new PS5 model consumes between 20 and 30 watts less during gaming sessions, while generating roughly the same amount of noise and heat.

New PS5 Firmware

Current owners of a new-generation console from Sony will also be told about new features coming in the firmware: 1440p support, playlists, and new social features coming to all PS5 users, after beta testing. from the end of July.

The 1440p video output is a good solution for those who do not have a 4K monitor or Smart TV, but still want a higher resolution than Full HD. 1440p video output on PS5 requires a TV or PC monitor that supports 1440p 60Hz or 1440p 60/120Hz output.

PS5 1440p

If the game you are playing supports 1440p, you can experience native 1440p output on your screen. If you’re playing a game at a higher native resolution, such as 4K, then you can benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling up to 1440p output. You can check if your HDMI device is compatible by selecting “Test 1440p output” in the “Display and Video” options within the PS5 system settings.

If you can’t connect your PS5 to the network right now, but you want to manually update the PS5 system software, follow these steps:

  1. On a PC or Mac, create a folder named ‘PS5’ on a FAT32 formatted USB drive. Inside that folder, create another folder named ‘UPDATE’.
  2. Download the update file and save it in the ‘UPDATE’ folder. Save the file as ‘PS5UPDATE.PUP’.
  3. Plug the USB drive containing the file into your PS5 console.
  4. Start the PS5 console in safe mode: press and hold the power button and release it after the second beep.
  5. Select Safe Mode Option 3: Update System Software.
  6. Select Update from USB storage device > OK.
