Desktop icons, shortcuts and taskbar buttons have different controls. First decide whether you want to show hidden items, add a system icon, create a shortcut or change an icon’s appearance. That keeps a simple customization task from becoming an unnecessary reset.
Show icons that have been hidden
Right-click a blank part of the desktop, open View and enable Show desktop icons. Turning that option off hides desktop items; it does not delete their files.
If the desktop is still unexpectedly empty, check whether you are using the intended user account and whether Desktop is being synchronized elsewhere. Do not move or delete unfamiliar folders merely to make an icon reappear.
Add This PC, Recycle Bin or another system icon
- Open Settings > Personalization > Themes.
- Open Desktop icon settings.
- Select the system icons you want.
- Apply the change.

Create a desktop shortcut
For an ordinary file or program, right-click the target and use Send to > Desktop (create shortcut). On Windows 11, you may need Show more options to see that menu. App types differ, so a packaged Store app may need its own supported shortcut method.
A shortcut points to something else. Deleting that shortcut normally leaves the target in place. A real document stored on Desktop is different: deleting it affects that document. Check an item’s type and Properties before removing it.
Change an icon
For a compatible shortcut, open Properties > Shortcut > Change Icon. For a normal folder, check Properties > Customize > Change Icon. System icons can be changed or restored in Desktop icon settings.
Use a trusted icon file or an existing system resource, and keep any external icon file in a stable location. An arbitrary JPEG is not automatically a suitable Windows icon. The Restore Default control can return supported system icons to their original appearance.

Windows 10 steps remain useful for an existing installation, but its standard free support ended on 14 October 2025. Check your system’s support arrangements or migration options rather than treating it as the default for a new setup.
