A WhatsApp away message and a scheduled message are different things. An away message replies when someone contacts a business. Scheduling a birthday greeting means starting a new message at a chosen time. Check what your installed WhatsApp version actually offers before relying on it to send unattended.

The simplest option: set a reminder
Create a reminder with the person’s name, the intended time and a brief note of what to send. When it appears, open the correct chat, check the recipient and send the message. This works without giving a separate scheduling app broad access to your conversations.
For a single birthday or follow-up, reviewing the message yourself also helps catch the wrong time zone or an outdated plan. A draft, pinned chat or broadcast list is not proof that a message will send later.
What about iPhone Shortcuts?
Apple supports time-based personal automations. In Shortcuts, create an automation with a time trigger and check whether your installed WhatsApp provides the action you need.
If it does, choose the contact and message carefully, review the run/confirmation options, and test with your own device before relying on it. A time trigger alone does not guarantee that every third-party app can send while the phone is locked. If the action is absent or asks for interaction, use a reminder instead.
Set an away message in WhatsApp Business
- Open WhatsApp Business and its business-tool settings.
- Open Away message and turn it on.
- Write the reply and choose the schedule offered, such as a custom period or outside business hours.
- Choose which recipients should receive it, save it and test the behavior.
The official away-message help describes replies to customers who message you. It does not turn that reply into a proactive birthday message. Our WhatsApp Business overview explains the separate app.
Be careful with third-party schedulers
Check whether a tool only creates a notification or actually presses Send, whether it needs the phone unlocked, and which permissions it requests. Avoid a workflow that requires removing your screen lock just to schedule a message. Test after app updates and battery-saving changes.
