Some owners of a Ring doorbell should be on the alert: certain units are burning by surprise, at least in the US, where several cases have already been recorded. So much so that the country’s Consumer Product Safety Commission has made an appeal for all those owners of a device like this. What exactly is happening? We explain it to you.
Ring’s video caller
One of the most popular and well-known products in Amazon’s own equipment catalog is the Ring video doorbell. This brand, owned by the Jeff Bezos giant, offers several solutions among its teams, among which its so-called Video Doorbell stands out .
In case you don’t know what it is or how it works, this device is placed at the entrance of our house, replacing the conventional bell. Instead, what you have is the call next to a camera that is activated every time someone calls. Thanks to this, you can see through your mobile phone or PC who is at the door and even communicate with him (in case, for example, you do not want to open or are even away from home and you also want to give a message to your visitor) .
A solution as you see quite interesting and very own the “connected house” that we all yearn to set up in our home, since it offers us greater control over who knocks on our door.
The problem is that the second generation of this video doorbell seems to be giving more of a headache to its owners (and to Amazon): some units have been burned in certain homes and there is already a record and a call for a review of a complete circulation.
Overheating problems, how does it occur?
The problem appears to affect second-generation units under the model number 5UM5E5 . The battery in this run can overheat when the wrong screws are used in its installation, as they can puncture the unit during the process, increasing the risk of it catching on fire.

At the moment, as we mentioned, the call for withdrawal is only taking place in the US and Canada, where it affects more than 358,000 stamps sold. On the manufacturer’s official website it is indicated that if the Doorbell is correctly installed , there is no risk whatsoever – since the problem comes with the improper use of screws that pierce the battery. To check this, you can consult the installation guide – eye PDF download link in Spanish – and make sure that the steps have been followed properly.
In Spain, as far as it is known, no cases have been registered at the moment nor Ring has echoed the news, so possibly the print run with that serial number has only been distributed in the US and Canada.
How to check the serial number of your Ring
Although, as we say, no cases have been registered in Spain, you may now want to take a look at the serial number and be more calm.
To do this, it is as easy as consulting the box where the video doorbell came or, instead, taking a look at the back of it, where such information is also displayed (it is the S / N).
With that number, you will only have to enter the official website and enter it where it says “Enter DSN Here” and check if the device is affected (if so, “Valid DSN | Device Impacted ” will appear in “Results”).
