It is clear that one of the most essential tools on any phone is the keyboard . Without it, almost none of the applications that we use on a daily basis would make sense. Each user may have their favorite option, but all of them have the most necessary functions. One of the most used is voice dictation, a software that is activated when we touch the microphone icon. However, many Xiaomi users are unable to find this feature.
Users who have a Chinese mobile with MIUI will have Google’s Gboard as standard or any other keyboard if they decided to change the default one, since there are many and very popular ones in the app market, such as Microsoft‘s SwiftKey.

However, many have begun to run into this problem on the keyboard, which prevents finding the microphone that enables voice dictation of messages. This function is very useful when you want to send a written message, but you don’t want to use the popular audio notes. In other words, we can even use them to avoid touching the mobile while driving or performing another task in which it is almost impossible for us to stop to write a text.
How to configure
If you have your hands full or you’re in the car and you can’t touch your smartphone, you’ll already know how handy it is to be able to write a message by dictating it. But, to do this, and to avoid possible problems, you will have to configure the voice input first. To be able to dictate a message, you must check that the option is activated on your Android mobile by adjusting GBoard as follows:
- Open the settings menu of your Xiaomi
- Scroll down to the Additional Settings options
- Enter the Languages and text input menu
- Then click on Manage keyboards
- Here you will find the Google voice typing option
- enable it

If you have any other app other than the Google keyboard, in the previous steps you must select, first keyboard, and then activate automatic voice typing.
Why has it disappeared?
This failure can be something punctual that could be solved quickly, or at least it is like that on most occasions. The worst thing that could happen to us is that we have to change the keyboard for another of the many options that we can find on Google Play.

Although, as we will also see, the dictation could stop working due to a compatibility error between this tool and the system of our Chinese phone. But don’t worry, because it has an easy solution. It may even have been deactivated on its own without us realizing it. And it is that, basically, we are facing a failure that will have different solutions as we will see now below.
As it is most likely a software error that has caused this function of the smartphone keyboard to disappear, we are going to see a series of methods with which we will recover voice dictation with total success on Xiaomi mobiles .
how to get it back
If you are one of those who cannot find the icon, there are two clear tests that we must do to try to solve the error. With almost total certainty, the fault will be in one of them, so you will be able to have the microphone icon on your keyboard in a matter of seconds, since in all cases the solution has gone through one of these two methods. In an extreme case, it is always possible to uninstall and reinstall it. However, the solutions that give the best results are the following.

restart the mobile
If you haven’t restarted your device in a long time, now is a good time to do it, since with this simple action we could get it to work normally again. Even if you can, turn it off completely , wait a few minutes, and then press the power button again, much better.
As you already know, or should know, restarting the mobile deletes all open applications and eliminates the possible processes that have given an error. Therefore, this is the fastest solution to your problem, as you simply have to turn off the phone and wait between 10 and 30 seconds before turning it on again. When you do, try again to send a message to us by voice.
It is activated?
Now that we have told you how to configure it, it would not be strange that due to a GBoard update, the setting that allows you to dictate texts by voice has been disabled.
To check it, we must undo the path given above and enter:
- Settings
- Additional settings
- Language and text input
Once inside, we must make sure to enter Manage keyboards to make sure that the box ‘ Google voice typing ‘ is activated. Now we will have to go out and return to an app where it appears to see if the error has been resolved on the Xiaomi mobile.
Enable suggestions
If with this function active the icon still does not appear, we may have to activate the word suggestions, since otherwise , on many occasions we will not see the option. To do so we will have to enter again:
- Settings
- Additional settings
- Go to Languages and writing (or text input)
Then we touch on Manage keyboards and once inside we open the settings. Finally we touch on ‘Spell correction’ and activate Spell Check. The voice dictation icon should now appear.
assistant’s fault
Apparently, as reported by different users, you could be suffering from an incompatibility problem with the voice dictation of Gboard and the Google assistant. Although, this failure was mostly given to phones with Android 10.
Therefore, in order to activate this functionality, you must deactivate the option to access the assistant through the ‘Ok Google’ option, immediately after doing so, it is likely that it will work correctly again. You will have to go to:
- Settings Menu
- Enter ‘Assistant Settings’ in the search bar
- Inside select the options of ‘ Hey Google and Voice Match ‘
- Disable this tool from your device
From now on, it should work fine for you.
reset the keyboard
It will be as easy as deleting all the data of the app that gives life to this software, in this case Gboard, or clearing the cache . However, not even this method will sometimes allow us to be able to recover this vital functionality for many users on many occasions.
To do so go to:
- Settings app
- Applications
- GBoard (or whatever keyboard you use)
- Storage
- Clear cache and Clear data
If it has not made you recover the voice dictation of the Xiaomi, we will have to go to the next solution.
Uninstall updates
This failure may have started to occur from the last update received by the Xiaomi keyboard , so we can solve the problem by removing it from the Chinese mobile. To do this, we must enter:
- Settings
- Apps and notifications
- Enter the list of apps
- Select the keyboard you use, in our case Gboard
- Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right
- Select Uninstall updates .

try another app
Another of the easiest ways to know if it is the fault of the phone or the keyboard app is to download another tool from Google Play . In the Xiaomi app store we find different possibilities, so we only have to choose one of those to do the test. Here we leave you a few alternatives that you can download directly by clicking on the following links:
In case voice dictation works normally for you, it will be the fault of the app. On the contrary, if it still does not go, we will have to move on to the last solution, which will be the last possibility we will have to solve it on our own.
format the phone
To completely remove all data, and even updates, from our Xiaomi we must format it. In this way, we will be able to leave it from the factory, that is, like the first day we took it out of its box. To do this, we must enter:
- Settings
- over the phone
- Tap on the Backup and reset option
- Delete all data .
It will ask for our pattern or security pin. After entering it, tap on the OK button. In addition, we recommend that you make a backup of all the data on the smartphone so that you do not lose anything when the reset is executed.
