Who more or who less, on some occasion we have to read a QR code that is at a bus stop, on a restaurant table or anywhere else. We have become accustomed to using them, however, in Android 12 they do not always work well. A mobile camera reading error has been discovered that may have happened to us, but we did not know where it came from.
The person in charge of finding out has been Adrian Dabrowski, who has revealed the problem that affects many users. If you have a mobile that already enjoys the latest version and you use the Google camera with its smart function to read the codes, it is likely that sometimes the link does not take you where it should or that it does not even load.
Google camera changes codes
We don’t always have good light or we can easily stop in front of the code to scan it, but the mobile must still try to read the QR. In many of these situations, it is not possible to correctly interpret all the points that allow the smartphone to go to the correct website. Instead of what usually happens, that we must be patient to be able to read them, Google tries to get us to the link, although it makes mistakes along the way.
It has been found that the QR code reader repeatedly changes links even though it identifies them correctly, due to a programming error that should not happen. The mobile camera app decides by itself to add points in the links or scripts and this causes us not to see the website to which it should direct us. It also makes changes to the beginning and end of them, causing them to not work at all. The following examples are some of the cases that we can find:

The error apparently comes from Google’s intention to save space on the screens and that the full links do not appear, so when we see it on the smartphone it may seem fine, although later it does not load the website we expected. A situation that can give us a lot of headaches and make us waste a lot of time, thinking that the fault could be in our internet connection.

In order not to encounter this problem, all we have to do is avoid using our mobile camera to read this type of code. We can choose one of the many applications that are on Google Play and do exactly the same thing, or use Google Lens in a different way on the mobile, there are many options that we have. The simplest is to install the shortcut from the Android store.
It is curious that although they use the same technology, the researcher has confirmed that with this app from Google itself the error does not occur in any version of Android. In any case, Google is already aware of what happened and it should not be long until an update for the camera of mobile phones with Android 12 resolves it.
