Rapid Migration to the Cloud Would Lead to Data Leakage and Insecurity

The appearance of Coronavirus has caused many changes in the work sector. This pandemic has contributed to an important advance in the transformation to the digital world of companies. One of these important changes has been the increase in remote work and, as a consequence of this, a law has recently been approved that regulates teleworking. However, this has not been the only major change, we have had a rapid migration to the cloud that can leave our confidential data insecure. As a consequence of Covid-19, according to Trend Micro, the transformation towards the digital world has accelerated for 88% of global companies.

Rapid migration to the cloud and its consequences

According to Mark Nunnikhoven, vice president of cloud research at Trend Micro, it is very good news that most companies are embracing digital transformation and working in the cloud.

Rapid Migration to the Cloud

Through a Trend Micro survey, throughout the article we will discuss the challenges and findings in understanding cloud security. In that sense, the rapid migration to the cloud that has occurred is not just a process of setting everything up and then forgetting. Ongoing management is also necessary. and a strategic configuration to make the best decisions for the security of your organization.

Shared responsibility to protect data

Cloud infrastructure can be secure if the right measures are taken. One important thing to keep in mind is that customers must be responsible for keeping their confidential data safe , since in the cloud they work with a shared responsibility model .

The Trend Micro survey shows us three interesting aspects to comment on:

  1. 92% of respondents say they are confident that they understand their cloud security responsibility
  2. 97% think their cloud service provider offers sufficient data protection. That is not always the case, we must also remember that we are in a model of shared responsibility.
  3. 55% of those interviewed use third-party tools to protect their cloud environments, which can lead to security breaches.

On the other hand, the research also revealed that the number one risk facing cloud environments was misconfigurations.

Confidence in your cybersecurity positions of companies

The survey also found that companies seem to trust the security measures it has established in the cloud. In that sense, 51% say that rapid migration to the cloud has increased their focus on security best practices. We also have that 87% estimate that they have full or majority control of the security of their remote work environment. Furthermore, in a future hybrid workplace 83% think they will have full or majority control of their safety.

The security challenges of rapid migration to the cloud

Rapid migration to the cloud has had significant challenges, and that shows in the responses to the Trend Micro survey. Thus, 45% of those surveyed stated that security is a very important issue for the adoption of cloud work. Regarding the main operational headaches of protection in the cloud we have to:

  • 35% was the establishment of coherent policies.
  • 33% were concerned about patching.
  • Another 33% were concerned about the protection of traffic flows.

On the other hand, according to Mark Nunnikhoven, if we use intelligent and automated security tools, companies can migrate to the cloud without problems, guaranteeing the privacy and security of their data. Regarding the security solutions for cloud environments classified as the most fundamental for companies were:

  • Network protection for 28%.
  • Cloud security posture management for 26%.
  • Cloud access security agent tools for 19%.
