Fast charging is one of the elements that has advanced our smartphones the most. Now it has done the same with the new Quick Charge 5, which offers charging capabilities never seen before, also promising that the first phones to release it will arrive this same 2020.
Quick Charge 5, extreme charging speed
As Qualcomm reported in a press release, Quick Charge 5 is the fastest commercial charging technology for Android devices. It is the first fast charging platform that supports more than 100 ”of power, allowing a smartphone to charge 0 to 50% of its battery in just five minutes or 100% in just 15 minutes. This is 70% more efficient than Quick Charge 4 and 10 times more power than the first version of Quick Charge.

Fast charging is constantly being scrutinized by its lovers and detractors. The latter believe that it degrades the life of the battery and is dangerous given its high voltage. To alleviate this “fear” Qualcomm has ensured that Quick Charge 5 integrates 12 separate protections for voltage, current and temperature , including protection against USB input overvoltage at 25V and external power controls beyond 30V.
The company has also detailed that it runs 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the previous standard. In addition, “Battery Saver” technology and “Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities” have been incorporated , which work together to maximize energy transfer efficiency, increase safety and help extend the life cycle of the battery.
When will we see it on a mobile
Qualcomm has also been referring to the first mobiles that will see these charging capabilities. Without offering concrete details, it has revealed that Quick Charge 5 is currently in the process of integrating with various brands, and is expected to appear on the first commercial mobiles in the third quarter of 2020 . This technology is compatible with Snapdragon 865 processors and the new Snapdragon 865 Plus , as well as with the company’s future chips.
