PS5 Chassis B: What it is, what it means, where to buy it and tips

Throughout the life of a console , revisions are released by its manufacturer, although they are not always announced. In the case of PlayStation, it is quite common to speak of ‘Fat’ and ‘Slim’ to differentiate the original console from the revision that was released later, with a smaller size. However, within each version there are also changes. Each revision is given a name and must be marked on the product label. Between one revision and another there may be small aesthetic changes, changes in materials for other more resistant —or cheaper—, differences between components due to change in supply or even modifications that seek to polish errors or add improvements. Most of the time, this goes unnoticed, but this has not been the case with the PlayStation 5 Chassis B. In this post, we will tell you everything you need to know about this new body for Sony‘s next-generation console.

PS5 Chassis B

What is PlayStation 5 Chassis B?

Chassis B is the first significant PS5 revision . It began to be manufactured approximately in the middle of 2021 , in May, and it is the model that is being marketed in stores in Europe – if you can find one due to the low level of stock, of course.

The great novelty of this model is that it weighs 300 grams less than the original model. However, although there are more differences , the features are identical to the 2020 version.

What consoles mount the new Chassis B?

In order not to get confused, we are only going to talk about the console models that are marketed in Europe , since there are multiple variants depending on the region in which the product is marketed and it makes no sense to talk about the models that we cannot access. in our market.

As you may know, the PlayStation 5 is sold in two different formats: with and without a disc player . The original PS5 model with a disc drive was called CF1-1016A, while the digital version was codenamed CFI-1016B.

Well, the first models that have been marketed in our region as of mid-2021 are called CFI-1116A (version with disc player) and CFI-1116B (purely digital version). These two models mount the new Chassis B.

By the way, to differentiate, many media are going to refer to these models as ‘2020 10X’ and ‘2021 11X’. If you’re wondering where to buy this console , all PS5 models currently in stores are of this new spec .

It is not only the weight that is the big difference between these two models. Sony has taken note of some of the problems that the original PS5 had and has tried to fix them in this new edition.

Differences in the heatsink

Like any current performance device, the PS5 is not immune to some difficulties when it comes to heat dissipation . This does not mean that we are going to have thermal throttling during our games (as it can happen in some models of gaming laptops), but it is clear that they have discovered a new, more efficient method of lowering the temperature of the console.

Chassis B mounts a new heatsink , which is curiously less bulky , but more efficient than the original. You can see a comparison between the two pieces in this video by Austin Evans, who dissects the two models of the console and puts both parts in parallel so you can see the differences. He dares to say at a glance that it is worse, but as we will see in the next paragraph, appearances are deceiving.
