iphone-xrApple‘s Face ID is one of the most useful elements, both to unlock our iPhone and to validate purchases. But sometimes not everything works as it should, and failures can occur, which many users experience on their iPhone XR. Today we are going to see the best ways to solve them.

Sometimes the Face ID may not work properly. However, before blaming it for a device malfunction, there are several factors that can influence this problem, and that we can solve in the vast majority of cases after having highlighted a series of checks.

How to fix the problem

The first check and that is common to any problem, is that we have the latest version of the Operating System installed or that we have no pending patch. Then we must check the Face ID settings, from Settings / Face ID. Inside we will have to make sure that all functions are activated.

Camera locked

We must also make sure that the TrueDepth camera of the iPhone XR is not covered by the case or screen protector we may have. In addition, we will verify that there is no residue or dirt that may be interfering with the sensor malfunction.

Sunglasses

Face ID must be able to recognize us, so elements that cover the face can hinder your work. That is, eyes, nose and mouth must be fully visible to the TrueDepth camera. Apple indicates that Face ID works with many sunglasses. However, if we wear sunglasses designed to block certain types of light , they may be blocking the infrared light used by the TrueDepth camera. In that case we must try again without the glasses on.

At the right distance

Face ID only works on the iPhone XR in portrait orientation and looking at the TrueDepth camera. This has a range of vision similar to what you have when making a selfie or a FaceTime call. If the iPhone is resting on a surface as if it is being held in a natural position, the phone should be at the distance of a maximum arm (between 25 and 50 cm) from the face.

Add alternative look

Although Face ID continually learns from the slight changes that the user may suffer, some radical change in appearance can result as an identification failure. For this we will have to configure an alternative aspect so that Face ID continues to recognize us. To do this we must follow the following steps:

  • Go to Settings / Face ID and code.
  • Click on Configure an alternative aspect.
  • Now we look directly at the iPhone and place the face inside the frame.
  • We slightly move the head to complete the circle. If we can’t move our head, press Accessibility Options.
  • When we have finished the first Face ID scan, click on Continue.
  • We slightly move the head to complete the circle for the second time.
  • When we have finished the Face ID configuration, press OK.

Reset Face ID

If we still have problems, we must try to reset the Face ID. This will erase all the settings and we will have to reconfigure them from scratch. We can do it from Settings / Face ID and code, and click on Reset Face ID. Then click on Configure Face ID to reconfigure the function and see if the problem has disappeared.
