In recent times the problems that have appeared in Xiaomi terminals have given much to talk about, finding among other things with software bugs that MIUI 12.5 is trying to solve in the best way. However, there is a fault that not even the latest version of the layer can solve and it is the proximity sensor.
Several high-end and mid-range Xiaomi terminals are being affected by this failure and not even Xiaomi herself knows how to solve it. Complaints do not stop happening on social networks and in different forums without a solution in this regard. On other occasions we have seen similar failures with the proximity sensor in other makes and models but they have not lasted as long.
What happens and which mobiles are affected?
The failure that appears when having to resort to the proximity sensor during calls, for example, causes the screen to not turn off or to turn on and off continuously while we rest the mobile on our ear. This also appears when we carry the mobile in our pocket and also when making use of sound, for example with WhatsApp voice notes, where the proximity sensor goes crazy and continuously turns off the screen.

Although Xiaomi has not yet admitted this problem directly, it has done so indirectly and when trying to find a solution it has drawn up a list of possible affected mobiles with the following mobile models: Xiaomi Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro, Mi Note 10 Lite, Redmi Note 10 and Redmi Note 10 Pro. But based on our own experience and the complaints we have seen on the net, we can expand the list with several Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 8.
The search for a solution to the proximity sensor in Xiaomi
After having seen so many complaints, that list of Xiaomi mobiles with sensor problems that the firm has prepared, comes together with a link to a survey in which it tries to know more in depth what is happening with their devices. We can access the survey that is in English and fill it out, answering questions such as, at what times have we suffered failures with the sensor. But something very curious that we can see in the survey itself is that this sensor is continually referred to as an “ultrasonic sensor” which gives the reason to many experts who already affirmed that the mentioned models do not have a proximity sensor as such and that’s where the inconvenience would come from.

What Xiaomi did was combine software with the accelerometer and a sensor based on ultra sounds to achieve imitation of the proximity sensor. We do not know if with this survey and some update the solution to the problem will be found, but the truth is that despite this strange change that Xiaomi produced, with the methods to solve the failures with the Xiaomi proximity sensor in some cases it is You have managed to calibrate “the sensor” and the problem has disappeared. What we do hope is that in future units this problem will disappear, either by changing the technology used or optimized properly.
