ZTE has been showing off its Axon 20 5G for a few weeks. It is understandable, since it is the first smartphone to offer under-screen camera technology to consumers, thus ahead of other brands such as Xiaomi or Samsung that are already testing their own systems.
ZTE has finally officially launched the ZTE Axon 20 5G showing off this technology but with some somewhat restrained features for what we expected, such as a mid-range processor and a somewhat limited camera system.
The first mobile with an under-screen camera
Smartphone manufacturers have set their sights on eliminating all traces of the front camera on their phones in order to provide consumers with the most immersive experience possible on their devices. That is why we have seen how the frames of mobile phones are increasingly reduced thanks to the use, first of a classic notch, then a notch in the form of a drop of water, pop-up camera modules and, as a last option, the hole in the screen.
So far we have already seen prototypes from Samsung, OPPO and Xiaomi that work with cameras under the screen but all of them suffer from poor image quality and glare and brightness problems caused by the display glass.
ZTE puts on sale the first mobile on the market with this feature thanks to the development of a system that is based on the interaction of five technologies: a special screen material, a dual control chip, a single controller circuit, a matrix of special pixels and a self-developed shooting algorithm.
The new screen material improves light input to the front camera, while the chip and circuitry solve the timing problems of conventional color displays when using an under-screen camera. The special pixel matrix optimizes the pixels to improve display consistency, while the algorithm optimizes and improves the clarity of photos. ZTE’s Axon Product General Manager shared a sample of the Axon 20 5G’s front camera to demonstrate the kind of image quality that is possible.
According to the company, this is the result obtained with this camera under the screen of the ZTE Axon 20 5G :
