Olympus OM-D Webcam: Compatible Cameras, Requirements and Configuration

Olympus has launched OM-D Webcam an application with which you can convert some of its cameras into a webcam. Something that we have already seen that other manufacturers have been allowing in recent months and that adds value to the product, something that Olympus is not doing badly right now after hearing the news of the sale of its photography division.

OM-D Webcam for Olympus cameras

Olympus OM-D Webcam

Olympus was so far one of the few major manufacturers in the world of photography that had not yet released its own software to turn its cameras into webcams. Luckily this is all history, the brand finally announced the availability of OM-D Webcam , an application that currently only works on Windows, but that is sure to be very interesting for the owners of one of its cameras.

So, if you have any of the supported models, you can use them both as a webcam for use in video call applications or to stream video through Twitch platforms without the need to invest in an external capturer, a hardware that certainly gives another type of advantages, but that adds an extra cost to those who only seek a better image quality for specific moments.

OM-D Webcam, as we say, is only compatible with Windows computers and for these specific camera models :

  • Olympus OM-D E-M1X
  • Olympus OM-DE-M1
  • Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II
  • Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III
  • Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II

Using the application is as simple as seen in other similar solutions from manufacturers such as Sony, Panasonic, Canon or Fuji. Install them the application, connect the camera via USB to the PC with Windows operating system and that’s it. Now it’s just a matter of configuring the application you want to use and that’s it, you will have a webcam with better image quality thanks to larger and brighter sensors, in addition to all the advantages of being able to use interchangeable optics.

One last important detail, the application for the moment only captures the image . The sound must go separately through a USB microphone or your own integrated into your computer. So now that you know everything, you can download OM-D Webcam from here.

A surprise amid so much uncertainty for the Olympus user

The launch of OM-D Webcam is welcome news for Olympus fans, especially now that the brand has announced it is selling its photography division. A decision based on the need to focus its efforts on other a priori more productive businesses for the company.

Therefore, this software is a demonstration that, for now, they will not leave their customers lying. Furthermore, the brand will not disappear from the photographic market. The company that purchased this division is the same company that long ago bought Sony’s VAIO computer division. So there will continue to be cameras from Olympus for a long time, the only thing is to see how far they manage to advance and the possible consequences that it will bring to the micro four-thirds format that together with Panasonic had always driven so much.

However, that is another story. Now the important thing is that you know that if you have one of these supported Olympus cameras you can easily use it as a webcam. Hopefully it is not the last surprise and soon there will also be a version for macOS.
