What is the problem and what does Apple pose?
Surely on more than one occasion you have had some kind of inconvenience to use your iPhone in a situation in which either the screen or your own finger has been wet. If you try to use the device in the rain, you will probably notice that the screen gets false touches from the drops of water falling on it, making it almost impossible to control it. The same happens if you have a wet finger and you are spreading the liquid over the surface, as well as the Touch ID itself fails unless the finger is completely dry and clean.
A recently granted patent to the Cupertino company explores a technology that would make these described problems disappear altogether. As explained in the document, the problem with capacitive screens is that the force applied to the screen with the finger is not measured as such, but the presence of it in one of its points. Therefore, a drop of water is often interpreted as if it were a touch with the finger and that is where the origin of the problem lies.
Apple describes a technology that refers to a physical button, but could well be translated to an entire touch screen surface in some other way. It explains at a technical level how this surface could be able to detect when it is a touch made by a finger or a drop of water, also differentiating how wet the finger is. This would be done through a meticulous calibration system that, of course, is still pending to be successfully developed if we take into account that this is only a patent, although it must be remembered that already in the past there have been applications from company patents. that pursue the same objectives.
Another important step for the toughest iPhone
Making an iPhone much more manageable in wet conditions will be a very important step if it does come along. However, it is also that typical case that we mentioned at the beginning with respect to being able to submerge an iPhone without fear that the liquid ends up entering the plate of the same.
