Nest Hello Live View Not Working but Still Recording? What to Check

Your Nest Hello sends a recording of someone at the door, but opening Live View leaves you staring at a loading circle. Start by checking the newest recording’s timestamp, then try the live feed on another device. These checks help narrow down what is failing.

This guide covers the original Nest Hello, now called Nest Doorbell (wired, 1st gen). Owners in this Live View discussion and another recent thread describe recordings arriving while live video will not load. Some report the problem after moving to Google Home. These reports alone do not establish a single cause.

First, check whether it is still recording

Play a clip recorded after the Live View problem began. An older clip can still play from your stored history even if the doorbell has since gone offline. Our guide to how home IP cameras work explains local and cloud recordings.

Fresh uploads are a useful clue, but they don’t prove every part of the connection is working normally.

1. Use the right app after migration

If you transferred the doorbell from Nest to Google Home, use the Google Home app for Live View. Google’s transfer guidance says live video moves to Google Home and Google Home for web. New video history also moves there; older Nest history remains in the Nest app until it expires.

If you have not transferred the doorbell, check it in the Nest app that manages it. In either case, confirm that you are using the account and home that contain your doorbell.

2. Refresh the app and compare another screen

  1. Install the latest available version of the app you use to view the doorbell.
  2. Close and reopen it. Return to the home screen, then open the doorbell again.
  3. Restart your phone if the feed still will not load.
  4. For a doorbell in Google Home, open home.google.com in a supported computer browser. Sign in with the same Google account and select the same home.

Google lists app updates, reopening the app, and restarting your viewing device in its video-playback troubleshooting guide. A feed that works on another screen points you to the original viewing device, although it doesn’t identify the exact fault.

Use a computer for this comparison: Google says Home for web on iPhones and iPads does not support cameras originally set up with Nest. See its web-viewing requirements.

3. Check the connection if uploads also stop

If the doorbell is offline or no new recordings appear, follow Google’s offline-camera checks. Check whether other devices have internet access and whether Wi-Fi reaches the front door reliably. Also check the phone’s connection when testing Live View.

For persistent coverage problems, our single-router and mesh Wi-Fi guide explains what different setups can help with. Test the connection before buying equipment.

4. Restart the original Nest Hello

A restart keeps your settings. A factory reset erases settings and video history, so begin with a restart. Follow the original Nest Doorbell (wired) section in Google’s restart instructions:

  1. Use the release tool in the hole at the bottom to detach the doorbell from its base.
  2. Leave the wires on the back connected.
  3. Use the tool to hold the rear button near the top for about 10 seconds.
  4. Allow it to reconnect, then test Live View again.

For an original Nest Hello powered by a plug-in adapter, Google instead describes unplugging the adapter from the wall, waiting 10 seconds and plugging it back in. Newer doorbells have different instructions, so check your model.

Still failing? Give Google a clear report

Contact Google Home and Nest support with the details below. This makes it easier to compare your issue with other reports.

  • Your doorbell model, app version, and phone operating system.
  • When the problem started and whether you recently transferred to Google Home.
  • Whether a newly recorded event plays.
  • Whether Live View works on another phone or a computer.
  • Which restart and connection checks you have already tried.

FAQs

Does Nest Hello need a paid plan for Live View?

No. Google’s feature comparison lists Live View without a subscription for the first-generation wired doorbell. Paid plans add video history and other features.

Can I use the Nest app after transferring to Google Home?

After transfer, Live View is available in Google Home and Google Home for web. Older recordings can remain in the Nest app until they expire. Opening Nest does not transfer the doorbell back.

Will a factory reset delete my recordings?

Yes. Google says it deletes the entire video history and your personalized settings. Try a restart and the other checks first. Download any clips you need to keep before considering a factory reset.

Does a playable old recording mean the doorbell is online?

No. Stored recordings can remain available while the camera is disconnected. Check for a newly uploaded event and compare its timestamp with when Live View stopped working.
