Google Home Keeps Asking You to Set It Up? What to Try

If Google Home keeps showing its welcome screen, start by choosing the Google Account you already use for your home. If your lights, speakers or cameras come back, keep them paired and check whether the app remembers your account the next time you open it.

Several Google Home users report seeing the welcome or setup screen again when they launch the app. One said selecting an account let them open the app. Another said their devices eventually loaded after a long wait. Other users describe similar prompts in the replies. See the welcome-screen discussion and the setup-at-every-launch discussion.

1. Open your existing home

  1. If the welcome screen offers an account picker, select the Google Account you use to manage the home.
  2. When the app opens, tap your profile picture or initial in the top right and check the account. Use the arrow beside the account to switch if needed.
  3. If you manage more than one home, use Switch home and select the one with your devices.
  4. Try a simple control, such as turning on a light. Close and reopen the app to see whether the welcome screen returns.

If you normally share the home with someone, ask the admin to confirm your account still has access. Google explains how to check the signed-in account and membership in its guide to home permissions.

Keep your existing home while you test. Deleting it can require you to set up devices again and can lock access to their Nest video history. See Google’s home management guide.

2. Update Google Home and restart your phone

  1. Look up Google Home in the Play Store on Android or the App Store on iPhone. Install the update if one is offered.
  2. Close the app completely, then reopen it.
  3. If setup still appears, restart the phone and repeat the test with the same account and home.

These are standard app checks. Google shows how to update Google Home, and Apple explains how to close and restart an app on iPhone or iPad.

3. Try clearing the Android app cache

On Android, open Settings → Apps → Home → Storage & cache → Clear cache. The app may be listed as Google Home, and the storage menu can have a different name on your phone. Open Home again and check whether the prompt returns.

Clearing the cache removes temporary files. Leave Clear storage alone during this test because it erases app data. Some users reported that clearing the cache helped, while others still saw the setup screen. See Android’s explanation of the two storage options.

4. Check the same home on another device

If you have another phone or tablet with Google Home, open the same home there. When its controls work, you have a way to use your devices while you troubleshoot the first phone. If both phones have trouble connecting on your home Wi-Fi, check whether other apps can reach the internet. Our home Wi-Fi guide explains how to check whether coverage is part of the problem.

For compatible Nest cameras and doorbells, open home.google.com in a computer browser, select the same account and home, and check the feed. Google lists the supported controls and browser requirements in its Google Home for web guide.

What to include when you report the issue

If the prompt keeps returning, send feedback from your profile menu if it opens, or contact Google Home and Nest support. Include these details so support can see which part of setup repeats.

  • Your phone model, operating system and Google Home app version.
  • The exact message and whether it appears on every launch.
  • Whether choosing your account restores your existing devices.
  • Whether the same home opens on another phone or tablet.
  • The app updates, restarts and cache checks you already tried.

FAQs

Does the welcome screen mean my devices are gone?

Check the original account and home first. If its rooms and devices still appear after you select the account or open Home on a second device, the home is still there.

Does clearing the app cache remove my devices?

Clearing the cache removes temporary files on the phone. Deleting a home is a separate action in the Google Home app. Select Clear cache for this test and leave the home in place.

Is there an update that fixes the repeating setup prompt?

We could not verify a release that fixes this exact prompt as of November 7, 2026. Install any update offered for your phone, then test it. Check Google’s release notes for new fixes.

Should I reinstall the app or reset my speaker?

Start with the account, app and second-device checks. Some users still saw the prompt after reinstalling. If your speaker works from another phone, keep its settings and continue troubleshooting the phone that shows the prompt.
