mydlink Geofence: Enable and Disable IP Cameras by Geolocation

The manufacturer D-Link has added a new functionality to the mydlink application that we have been asking for for months. The totally free mydlink app, and compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, allows us to view, manage and administer all the manufacturer’s IP Cloud cameras, as well as their smart plugs and other home automation devices. Now they have incorporated the possibility of geolocation to carry out certain actions automatically, do you want to know everything we can do?

The mydlink application is a totally necessary app to install, administer, manage and view the manufacturer’s IP cameras, without this app we will not be able to use your home IP cameras or your home automation devices. This app is one of the fastest, most intuitive and advanced that we have tested to date, and it is that we usually use D-Link IP cameras for their image and video quality, and because the D-Link Cloud with its fully automatic cloud recording works really well. You can download the application for free from Google Play and also from the App Store:

Geo-fencing: the exciting new feature now available

The manufacturer D-Link has «Landscapes» in the mydlink app, which are basically profiles that allow us to activate or deactivate the privacy mode of the different IP cameras of the manufacturer, we can configure one or more, since we will have great configurability . If we activate the privacy mode, the cameras will be turned off digitally so as not to record or detect movement / sound, if we deactivate the privacy mode, the cameras will be turned on and everything will work normally.

The ” Landscapes ” mode has mainly two profiles: “Home” and “Outside” . The most normal thing is to configure the “Home” so that all the IP cameras have the privacy mode activated, so that it does not record anything when we are at home. The “Outside” mode is so that all the IP cameras have the privacy mode deactivated, and that it records everything (if we have it configured).

Until now, this had to be done manually, but with only three presses on the smartphone: open the mydlink app (first press), press on the dates in the center of the menu (second press), and select “Away” mode or “Home” depending on what we want (third press). Now D-Link has decided to greatly facilitate this, ideal in case you have to take the car from home and do not want to take your mobile to do this.

Now we will have the option of “Geo-fencing”, this functionality allows to switch between “Home” and “Outside” depending on the geolocation of a mobile device. In the menu we can configure a specific location, and even expand and zoom out the map to locate exactly where our house is. The mydlink application will automatically detect when the smartphone crosses this geofence which is a circumference around our house.

By enabling the «Geofence», we can configure the size of the «Geofence» , if we want a small, medium or large geofence. Depending on what interests us, we can configure one size or another: Small is 150 meters in radius, medium is 250 meters in radius, and large is 500 meters in radius. It will also indicate the address of our house, or a nearby one, we can manually put the street that we want, to make it more specific. However, it is best to activate the GPS, wait a few minutes and enter the exact address that you indicate.

A very important detail is that we can configure different mobiles in the mydlink application for the geofence, specifically, we can associate up to a total of 4 mobile devices with the geofence feature. The “Outside” profile will be activated only when all smartphones leave the geofence, the “Home” profile will be activated when one or more smartphones enter the geofence.

As you have seen, this functionality is really interesting and we will not have to activate the different profiles manually with our smartphone, but thanks to GPS and geo-positioning, we can activate or deactivate the “Home” or “Away” profiles.
